Trump plans tariffs on Mexico, and Canada, increased tariffs on China
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says if the United States imposes tariffs, his country has billion of dollars' worth of U.S. products that'll be subject to tariffs as well. President Donald Trump says he plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday and double the 10% universal tariff charged on imports from China. The Republican president says illicit drugs such as fentanyl are being smuggled into the United States at "unacceptable levels" and import taxes would force other countries to crack down on the trafficking. China's commerce minister says differences on international trade should be resolved through negotiations. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she hopes she and Trump can reach an agreement.

Pending home sales slide to all-time low
Pending home sales in the United States slid to an all-time low in January as high mortgage rates, record-high home prices, and possibly the terrible weather last month hindered those seeking to buy. The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that its Pending Home Sales Index, which is an indicator of home sales based on contract signings, declined 4.6% to 70.6 last month. Pending transactions fell 5.2% from the year-ago period. There were month-over-month declines in the Midwest, South and West, with the most significant drop in the South. Despite stretches of high winds and low temperatures, sales in the Northeast rose modestly.

Survey tracks religions, religious traditions
The US Christian population has declined for years. A new survey shows that drop leveling off
The number of Americans who identify as Christian has declined steadily for years, but that drop shows signs of slowing. That's according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. Its Religious Landscape Study finds 62% of U.S. adults call themselves Christians, a level that has remained relatively stable since 2019. The rise of the religiously unaffiliated — the so-called "nones" — has also reached at least a temporary plateau, with approximately 29% of U.S. adults claiming no religious affiliation. By some measures, the U.S. remains overwhelmingly spiritual, with 83% believing in God or a universal spirit and 86% believing that people have a soul or spirit.

Public or private: Kootenai County GOP, others debate nature of town hall
In the wake of a legislative town hall where plainclothes security guards dragged a woman from the Coeur d’Alene High School auditorium, the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee maintains that the event was private — while the Coeur d’Alene School District, city police and prosecutors and some community members assert that the town hall was, by its very nature, a public event.

More adults are wondering if they have autism
More adults have sought insight on whether they have autism in the last decade. It often happens after their children are diagnosed or when they see social media posts. Common signs of autism include trouble with social communication and a fixation on certain routines or topics. These may go unnoticed during childhood. It can be costly and difficult to obtain an autism diagnosis later in life due to a shortage of medical professionals trained to work specifically with adults.

With ban of red food dye, attention turns to others
Health officials banned the artificial food color known as Red 3 from the U.S. food supply in January, citing a federal statute and cancer risks in lab rats. But the dye is only one of several synthetic colors widely found in common foods and other products. Synthetic dyes are a group of petroleum-based chemicals that don't occur in nature. They're used to make foods and other products more attractive, especially to children. The dyes have been associated with behavioral problems in some children. Experts say consumers who want to avoid them must read food labels carefully.

And divided, we shall surely fall

'Intense' flu season hits United States
The U.S. winter virus season is in full force, and by one measure is the most intense in about 15 years. One indicator of flu activity is the percentage of doctor's office visits driven by flu-like symptoms. According to data posted Friday, that level last week was higher than the peak of any winter flu season since 2009-2010. So far this season, the CDC estimates, there have been 13,000 flu deaths — including at least 57 children. The flu has forced schools to shut down in some states. One Texas district closed for three days because 650 students and 60 staff were out one day last week.

What is 'ordo amoris?'
Vice President JD Vance recently cited medieval Catholic theology in justifying the immigration crackdown under President Donald Trump. "Just google 'ordo amoris,'" he posted Jan. 30 on the social media platform X. The concept has been translated as "order of love" or "order of charity." The ancient St. Augustine said everyone and everything should be loved in its own proper way. "But since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special regard to those who ... are brought into closer connection with you," Augustine wrote. The medieval St. Thomas Aquinas echoed this theme but added sometimes one must help a stranger in greater need than a family member.
