Idaho's county clerks deserve our respect
We sometimes hear Idaho’s County Clerks spoken of dismissively as mere clerks – low-level functionaries just there to carry out the orders of county commissioners. Those dismissive individuals might be surprised to learn that elected clerks are the heart and soul of most counties in the Gem State. Idaho law says they serve as clerk of the courts in their county, as well as ex officio auditor, recorder and county commission clerk.

Judge affirms Camp Bay Road vacation
A First District Court judge has affirmed Bonner County commissioners' vacation of Camp Bay Road. The ruling could potentially put an end to a several-year debate over public access to Lake Pend Oreille via Camp Bay Road. In the 18-page ruling, District Judge Cynthia Meyer found the BOCC's vacation of the road met Idaho Code, that due process was not violated, and there was insufficient evidence to show bias on the board's part. Meyer also found the board's decision was in the public's interest because it guarantees public access to the lake on a pathway being created by M3 ID Camp Bay LLC.

Celebrating the greatest gifts this season
According to U.S. House of Representatives historians, on December 24, 1913, “thousands flocked to the U.S. Capitol to celebrate Washington’s first ‘community Christmas.’ "The centerpiece of the festivities, a 40-foot Norway spruce Christmas tree located on the East Front plaza of the U.S. Capitol, was adorned with red, white, and blue electric bulbs. The celebration boasted a lighted placard with the inscription, ‘Peace on earth, good will to men,’ nativity scenes, and a large chorus which sang Christmas hymns. "During the Christmas Eve celebration, the Marine Band played the national anthem, and in keeping with the spirit of community cooperation, Boy Scout troops assisted the Capitol Police with crowd control.”

BNSF sued over lack of plan to reduce grizzly deaths
Two wildlife conservation groups have filed a lawsuit against BNSF Railway over delays in finalizing a plan to reduce the number of federally protected grizzly bears that are killed by trains in northwestern Montana and northern Idaho. The lawsuit filed Thursday argues BNSF Railway and other railroads that use their tracks have been killing grizzly bears without an "incidental take permit" for decades. Such permits allow a certain number of protected animals to be killed in exchange for efforts to try to reduce the number of deaths. BNSF Railway says it has already taken many of the steps it proposes in its permit, such as fencing and removing dead wildlife and cattle from the tracks.

Christmas favorites help monks and nuns win fans, pay the bills
As Christmas approaches, Catholic nuns and monks are busy preparing the traditional delicacies they sell to a loyal fan base even in rapidly secularizing countries. For many monastic communities, producing cookies, fruitcakes, even beer for sale, is the only means to keep the lights on. But it's also an enticing way to strengthen their ties with laypeople. The religious sisters and brothers say they have to keep the balance between their vocation to prayer and earning their daily bread. So they pray as they roll dough and mix sugar, cinnamon, or even bourbon — trusting in God's hands the lay people to whom they hope the treats will bring joy.

Kohberger loses bid to have indictment tossed
BOISE (AP) — An Idaho judge says he won't reject the grand jury indictment of a man charged with killing four University of Idaho students last year. Bryan Kohberger is charged with four counts of murder in connection with the stabbing deaths at a rental home near the university campus in Moscow, Idaho. Earlier this year, Kohberger's defense attorneys filed motions asking the judge to throw out the indictment. They alleged the prosecution withheld evidence from grand jurors, and that there wasn't enough evidence to justify the indictment. Second District Judge John Judge rejected those arguments after reviewing the grand jury transcripts. Judge's decision was issued Friday and uploaded to the court's website on Monday.

Sagle's Camp Bay Road was constructed for public's benefit
In 1909, when the road was constructed at public expense, only two people lived at the lake end of the road, our great-grandmother and our grandfather. Instead of ending at the property line, the road continued across their private property for about a quarter mile. This expenditure of public money for a road through private property had to be done for a purpose beneficial to the public. There was nothing at the end of the road of benefit to the public in 1909 except access to the lake. Transportation at that time for people, freight, and mail was by steamboat to other ports such as Sandpoint, Hope, and Bayview.

Doctors have not been able to pin down a cause. Research suggests it is a body's prolonged overreaction to an infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the numbers on Wednesday. Researchers say the rise was mainly due the waning pandemic. The snapshot statistic is considered one of the most important measures of the health of the U.S. population.

Document: US willing to build energy projects if dams breached
In a strong sign that the U.S. will consider breaching four controversial dams on the Snake River, a leaked Biden administration document says the government is prepared to help build clean energy projects to replace the power generated by the dams. Still, Congress would have to agree before any of the Lower Snake River dams are removed, and that's unlikely to happen in the near future. The confidential document is a draft agreement to uphold 168-year-old treaties with four Pacific Northwest tribes. The Columbia River Basin was once the greatest salmon-producing river system in the world. But salmon runs are threatened, and conservationists say the dams are a main culprit.

What to know about Hanukkah, celebrations
Hanukkah — also spelled Chanukah or other transliterations from Hebrew — is Judaism's "festival of lights." On eight consecutive nightfalls, Jews gather with family and friends to light one additional candle in the menorah candelabra. They do so commemorate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BC, after a small group of Jewish fighters liberated it from occupying foreign forces. With the tiny supply of still ritually pure oil that they found in the temple, they lit the menorah.
