ITD is responsible for Sandpoint's gridlock
For decades, we've been told that a bypass is right around the corner. It's time to realize that the long-proposed bypass is not going to happen. ITD itself is responsible for the current state of traffic flow frustration. With the bypass initially touted as the most fiscally affordable route, it was sold as the only way to proceed.

Don't spend tax dollars on chemicals
The Bonner County Aquatic Invasive Species Task Force is a group of people who have been meeting every week or so since September to put together a grant request to control Eurasian milfoil in the Lake Pend Oreille system with minimum ecological damage. They have each spent over 100 hours of their own time researching information and providing speakers in areas of ecologically sound alternatives to the toxic treatment of milfoil used last year (400,000 gallons of dangerous herbicides — much of which was near swimming and migratory bird nesting areas, with inadequate warning to swimmers).

Don't reward lawbreakers with U.S. citizenship
While the debates rage about America's involvement in Iraq, the Senate has focused on a new issue, granting amnesty to 12 million in the U.S. illegally. Apparently, Sen. Larry Craig has been hearing demands for amnesty for lawbreakers because he applauds Sen. Ted Kennedy's amnesty proposal. If you support rewarding lawbreakers, call Craig and thank him for listening. If you aren't one of the few rich businessmen who wanted this, and are upset by his stance like me, take a moment to call his offices at (202) 224-2752 in Washington, D.C., or (208) 667-6130 in Coeur d'Alene.
Sand Creek's beauty motivating
In her most recent letter to the editor (May 17), Laurie Wadkins seem to call into question my motivations for supporting alternatives to the Sand Creek alignment of the byway project. My motivations are clear — why in the world would anyone want to permanently deface the Mona Lisa by spray painting it with graffiti? The Army Corps regulations support this viewpoint as well — making it mandatory that ITD select any practicable alternative that avoids having to break out the spray paint can (fills into the creek).

CAL's philanthropy is source of inspiration
On April 18, the Community Assistance League held its annual grant award celebration. I, like so many, was in awe of the number of agencies that received supportive funds to continue their mission. CAL has 200 members of hard-working, selfless, compassionate, bright women united in their determination to make our community a better place to live and a kinder and gentler community for everyone. They raised more than $40,000 this past year. All their profits were distributed to 33 agencies for various projects and services. This did not include the funds set aside for scholarships on behalf of graduating high school seniors. All members of CAL are volunteers.

Bulldogs fall to Hawks in 4A district opener
RATHDRUM — It was a familiar scene for the Bulldog softball team as one bad inning overshadowed six really solid ones in their season-long battle with 4A rival Lakeland. In the 4A District opener on Monday, it was a five-run second inning, helped by four Sandpoint errors, that proved too much to overcome as the Hawks held on for a 6-3 win."We did enough with the bat to win the game, had some good swings and the middle of the order has been coming through for us," said Sandpoint head coach Derek Dickinson. "One bad inning seems to be the recipe for us against Lakeland." Stephanie Ferguson had three hits, and Rachel Hammack and Macaela Brady two apiece as the Bulldogs out-hit Lakeland 10-8, outplayed them for six innings and even out-pitched them, as freshman Molly Givens shut them down except for the second inning."Molly threw a gem, hitting her spots all game," said Dickinson, whose team has now lost five close games to Lakeland this season. "I'm hoping we get another shot at Lakeland. I told the girls this is our home away from home, hopefully the sixth time will be the charm."Alisha Watson stroked a two-run double for the Hawks (9-16) in the five-run second inning. Lakeland will play at Moscow in a winner-to-state game at 4 p.m. today. The Bulldoggs (5-19) will play the loser in a loser-out game on Friday. Candidates' response to question was frightening
Regarding the Republican "Debate:" Did any of you find it troubling that in the 21st century candidates for president were asked if they believed in evolution? And, was it even frightening that some said that no they did not? And, I noticed that most, if not all, had opposing thumbs.

Signal needed when crossing the street
As Sandpoint's sidewalks fill up with visitors, it's even more important for drivers to watch for pedestrians. As a driver I find it frustrating to see pedestrians hovering near the curb and not know if they plan to cross the street or are simply chatting with friends or waiting for somebody. Their intentions are not always obvious.
