Separation of church and state often misunderstood

There is frequent misunderstanding and argument about the concept separation of church and state. Mr. Launders (May 1) correctly argues the nation’s founders sought to avoid a compulsory national church. But he then promotes the opposite in quotations he gave: “It is impossible to govern without God and the Bible” and that “We are a Christian people.” He added “if Mr. DeBaun doesn’t like God in government he should move because this is what the U.S. is all about.”

Ms. McGaughey stated that her participation was sponsored by the Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation. According to the foundation’s Web site, the president of the Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation is Bill Culpepper. Bill Culpepper is also the president and CEO of Sepro Corporation, the company that produces Sonar, Renovate, and many other herbicides. Help your neighbors and donate extra produce

Have you noticed the increase in food prices lately? Are you concerned about where your food was grown, and what chemicals were used? Would you like to do something positive to decrease the amount of fuels used to transport food? One simple way to address these issues is to consume more food produced locally, and the ultimate in local is your own backyard. The rewards of growing some of one's own foods are many. There is the exercise and fresh air involved in planting and maintaining the produce, the joy in watching it grow, the fun of walking out into the garden to select a tomato or salad greens minutes before eating them, sharing veggies and fruits that are fresh picked with friends. There is also the opportunity for families to work together on the project, and for youngsters to learn about plants, insects, soil, and so much more.

Savage will work to find solutions to problems

I am supporting Elaine Savage in her bid for re-election for more than one reason. The most important is that I have found her to be honest and approachable about problems that exist in the sheriff's department and in the jail. Also, Elaine Savage understands that public safety is complex, involving more than arresting people. Many crimes could be prevented by more effective ways of dealing with substance abuse, including education and treatment. Finally, as a mental health professional in the community I appreciate her openness to the need to improve the procedures for dealing with the many individuals with mental illness that come in contact with law enforcement and/or end up in jail. I have found her responsive to the needs of individuals as well as to the need for changes in the system.
