Sandpoint City Hall will re-open to the public at 8 a.m. on Friday. All public services will be provided from the front desk on the first floor and the public is encouraged to follow social distancing.

New COVID-19 case confirmed in Kootenai County
SANDPOINT — Panhandle Health District reported a confirmed COVID-19 cases Kootenai County on Thursday, bringing that county’s total to 62. There are also have been four cases reported in Bonner County. There are no reported novel coronavirus cases in Boundary, Benewah or Shoshone counties.

Protesters’ egregious behavior put us all at risk
To those who marched on the Long Bridge protesting the stay-at-home order: I am outraged by your egregious behavior of gathering on the Long Bridge to protest the governor’s edict to stay home to combat COVID-19. You have now put the entire community in danger by gathering in public, not practicing social distancing and not wearing masks. Until now Bonner County and Sandpoint have been able to contain this heinous disease and not doubt saved many lives by adhering to the stay-at-home order. I received my absentee ballot. I have some concerns. Why are the positions of sheriff and prosecuting attorney partisan? These positions should be nonpartisan, as judicial seats are, as their duties concern upholding the law without regard to party affiliation. Sections 34-618 thru 34-623 of the Idaho Election Laws do not mention declaring party affiliation when making a declaration of candidacy.

In the middle of a global pandemic, I can’t help but observe the hypocrisy of the radical right. They call themselves “pro life” yet they are protesting measures to protect people from death. Indeed, these measures are causing economic pain and stress, but who are these radicals to say that the cure is worse than the disease? Are you truly OK sacrificing the lives of others? No one is taking away your freedoms. We are asking you to help keep people alive. On judgment day, God will remember who put their self interests before their neighbors during this crisis. The far right would lock the gates to heaven and destroy the key, even if it meant that they will not enter.
If you think Scott, Wheeler are pro-life, think again
The words coined by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence should be familiar to all: “… that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Jefferson enumerated this phrase; life is superior to liberty, liberty is superior to happiness. Several years ago the idea for a poem and how it would begin came to me. The first line was quite clear and I worked out a few more lines, but was never satisfied with it. After years of ignoring it, I began working on it again last fall. By the end of October three stanzas were complete, but the poem was not. Shortly after the novel coronavirus began shutting things down, I thought of it again. This time the poem was completed. I call it “From Here to Eternity.”

When it comes to the (not yet mandatory) directives to quarantine ourselves in Idaho I feel fairly lucky. In addition to my small house, I also have a shop which I heat with a large potbelly stove circa 1900; I purchased the very hungry, five-foot stove more than 50 years ago at an antique shop in Denver. It served me well in my cabin on 40 acres near Steamboat Springs for 25 years before I moved to Sandpoint 30 years ago.

Let us all be heroes during pandemic, not villains
There have been many heroes in this pandemic, and I would like to thank them. Tom Chase and Schweitzer Mountain Resort could have had financially the best spring in the resort’s history but chose to close down to protect Sandpoint and Bonner County. My nephew is a nurse and he left the safety of Idaho to work in New York City. Local businesses like Percussionaire, Quest (now called Daher), Tamarack, and I’m sure many others who have put profit aside to saves lives. These people as well as the first responders and hospital workers are true examples of a culture of life and love that makes our area great. Thank you!

How to contend with unhappy downtown businesses with torn-up streets, dirt sidewalks and loss of patronage in general. And this despite the new, cutesy sculptures placed to obstruct the soon-to-be-rebuilt sidewalks. And how about those great $4,000-plus garbage cans, which were sure to draw in “flocks” of tourists? Instead of basking in the praise from grateful downtown taxpayers, our officials seem to want to change the subject to something else, anything else really. Perhaps they are just humble and don’t want to receive excessive public accolades for their wise choices and expenditures. “Investments” as they would defend, and certainly in the public’s best interests. Who could argue with their judgment?

Steve Bradshaw is the straight shooter that the county needs
Are truth and integrity missing in our government? Not with Steven Bradshaw, our District 1, Bonner County Commissioner. Not only has he spoken out loudly against the silicon smelter and the deceptive land dealings by HiTest Sand Inc., but he supported those opposing the Scotchman’s Peak Wilderness, when the people voted against it. They voted against it even without the clarity of designating it a “federal” wilderness. We need to keep this straight shooter!

There’s something about the human spirit that comes alive in times of duress. Nearly 17 million Americans filed for unemployment in the last three weeks. An increasing number of individuals and families in Sandpoint worry about where their next meal is going to come from. Covid-19 presents an unprecedented situation and it is not easy for anyone. No COVID-19 cases reported Sunday
For the second straight day, the Panhandle Health District announced no new cases in the five northern counties on Sunday. In Bonner County, it has been more than a week since a confirmed COVID-19 case was reported.

Construction project makes speedy advance
SANDPOINT Phase II of the Downtown Revitalization project, which resumed March 16, is set for completion on May 14 and construction work has still not been affected by COVID-19. According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, this construction project is exempt from self isolation orders because the type of work is classified as essential infrastructure.

Scott likens order to Nazi Germany
SANDPOINT — Outspoken state Rep. Heather Scott is drawing criticism for comparing Idaho’s stay-at-home order to the Holocaust and referring to Gov. Brad Little to as “Little Hitler.”

Heather Scott’s face book page, entitled “The Contagion of Fear” by Chuck Baldwin, in which he outlines that the Coronavirus is a hoax created by those who seek profit from the resulting panic, leading to tyranny with more government and loss of First Amendment liberties. I was curious to learn more and decided to listen to another posted video by Dr. V.A Shiva.

After several new cases over the past few days in Kootenai County, the Panhandle Health District announced no new cases in the five northern counties on Saturday.

Criteria OK’d for ID schools to reopen
Idaho State Board of Education approved minimum criteria for public school districts and charter schools to resume operations at their April 16 meeting. Prior to releasing this criteria, all schools in Bonner County decided to continue soft closure in grades K-12 for the remainder of the school year. Both Lake Pend Oreille School District and West Bonner School District have expressed hesitancy in reopening, with less than two months left in the school year.

Mike Nash’s letter in the Bee was most hilarious. His guy, the Donald, on the other hand wants to end the U.S. Postal Service, blames everyone else besides himself for anything and everything bad, but takes credit for all that’s sweetness and light. Just below that headline was another, stating “County virus cases remain at 4”. I confirmed that no, it wasn’t an Onion parody at all, but sure enough news in the Bonner County Daily Bee. I guess the fact that the commissioners are concerned about the economic well-being of county employees is laudable.

During World War I and World War II, women rolled bandages, and farmers were told what to grow. The government fixed prices. Factories were retooled. Grandmothers made bullets because the country needed them. People stayed indoors and covered windows during air raid exercises. Needed by troops, gas and food were rationed. Rubber, leather and metal were recycled. Victory gardens grew. Shoes were resoled. People performed selfless acts with civic pride.

Your computer may be able to help cure COVID-19
It seems to me that COVID -19 is with us. Until there is enough “herd immunity” to blunt the rapid spread, social distancing can affect the slope of contagion and ease the pressure on the health care system. This is extremely important if we are not to have needless deaths. However, the population will have to be exposed to the virus and develop antibodies to reach the goal of enough “immunity”. This path may indeed be inevitable.
Sheriff should not be a political position
I have been wondering why the position of sheriff is a party line vote on the primary ballots. The office of sheriff should be executed without regard for political affiliation, otherwise the holder of that office could violate the intention of equal justice under the law. After serving as a teacher for eight year, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service for 30 years, and serving on the West Bonner County School Board for 4 1/2 years, I know the difference in sending a “personal letter” versus sending a letter on my employer’s letterhead. Sending it as he did, he has made it clear to the public that it is his department’s opinion, not just his alone. How many people at the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office are having to answer questions regarding his letter since it was really a sheriff’s office letter.
When the time comes, will we argue who was right?
I’ve got a simple question to ponder: As I have not always been a good person, when Sheriff Daryl Wheeler, Rep. Heather Scottt, and I end up in hell, will we argue the point of who was right?

COVID-19, senior shopping and what happens in the grocery store
This morning I decided to avail myself of one of the “perks” being afforded me — reserved senior shopping from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at our local Safeway. It was surreal — if not sad — seeing most of us shuffling through the aisles, using carts as walkers. There were a few younger folks shopping. I briefly considered making a citizens arrest — “Stop in the name of Safeway and COVID-19” — I’d bellow. Officials engaging in reckless coronavirus politics
State Rep. Heather Scott and Sage Dixon in District 1 and Tom Remington in District 3 must believe that the coronavirus epidemic is not a North Idaho problem. Representative Scott believes that the stay-at-home guidelines restrict our freedom and liberty. Sage Dixon lobbied to have the violation reporting link on the state website deleted. Until recently, Tim Remington continued to hold in person church services at his church in Coeur d’Alene. Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler does not believe that the information from public health officials is reliable and asks Idaho to change course on social distancing and staying home.

A casual reader of the article referenced would be within their rights to conclude that North Idaho is a place populated by raging lunatics. The sad part is these folks are imported Californians not native Idahoans!
If Idaho Legislature fails to act, judicial action may be needed
Perhaps we all need to study Articles 1, 2, 4 and 10 of the Idaho Constitution. Safety is great, but so is liberty and freedom enshrined in our Constitution. Add the fact that the two principal contractors involved had virtually the same first name (and last initial), and the story takes on an extraordinary quality. I hope the city council and thus the citizens of Sandpoint will be given an update at their April 1 meeting about the impact of decreased revenues due to the virus and plans to mitigate same. Revenues from the hotel bed tax must certainly be impacted and those funds are used to support a number of departments and services in this year’s budget. Likewise with decreased sales the 1% sales tax collected for Memorial Field and parks improvements is probably impacted but perhaps to a lesser degree since the biggest contributor is grocery stores.

Abel Ramos Ramos Abel Ramos, 65, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away of natural causes on March 21, 2020. He was the 2nd of 7 children, born in Blackfoot, Idaho to Nore and Tina Ramos. He grew up in the Rising River area, where he attended Blackfoot School Districts, then graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1972. He later attended and graduated from Idaho State University, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Sociology. Abel spent his adult life in Pocatello, Idaho, where he held various jobs in the community. He worked at the Kraft plant, until it closed, then tended bar at different haunts throughout the Gate City. He then worked for Great Western Malt, where he later retired. Abel was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He played on various Rugby teams in the Pourtneuf Valley for most of his adult life. Abel was a member of The Pourtneuf Valley Rugby Football Club until his passing. He considered his teammates brothers and continued a strong bond with each of them long after they quit playing rugby matches. Abel was an avid dart player for which he held State titles. Abel devoted a lot of time to woodworking and volunteering his time during the holidays. He volunteered for "My Brothers Table", a non-profit of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Pocatello. Abel was a proud alumnus of Idaho State University. He was an advocate for education and encouraged all his nieces and nephews to further their education. He was the ultimate Dallas Cowboys fan. He was seldom seen without wearing a Cowboys hat or t-shirt. Duffy's Tavern was Abel's favorite place in town. He spent many evenings tending bar as well as holding down the barstool. Abel made long lasting friendships at Duffy's; his absence is sure to be noticed. He was a man who never met a stranger. Abel was always able and willing to help his friends and family. He was always putting others first, was a mentor to loved ones, and never turned down a friend in need. Always greeted everyone with a kiss. He was a man of many, many words, and big opinions. He was a man with a big heart, a one of a kind smile, and an unforgettable laugh. He will be dearly missed. Abel is survived by his siblings, Noel Ramos of Idaho Falls, ID, (Dan) Faulkner, of Danville, Kentucky, Isabel Zamora of Idaho Falls, ID, Adrian Ramos of Blackfoot, Idaho; and by nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nore and Tina Ramos; his siblings, Rene Ramos and Linda Kinghorn; niece, Tina Louise Kinghorn; and his sweetheart, Lori Hagen. There will be a celebration of life held in Pocatello, to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been made in Abel's name.
