Tax relief remains atop legislators' goals
Three weeks ago, I explained the difference between three property tax proposals currently circulating in the Statehouse. While each of these proposals addressed the subject in a different fashion, all had the overarching goal of reducing the tax burden that property owners in Idaho are experiencing. The introduction of these three bills (H77, H78, H79) led to broader discussions within the Legislature about the merits of each proposal.

Lack of concern threatens Priest River
At Priest Lake Elementary when the cold-water bypass was discussed, I brought a jar of rock-snot, from the Priest River near where I live showing how human-manipulated warm water and sediment loading has injured the river. I am optimistic that human-caused damage could be addressed by cooling the river with a cold-water bypass from Priest Lake. I was hoping if people became informed, they would agree to save the impaired Priest River ecosystem. A rude woman interrupted a conversation I was having. She knew me but refused to identify herself. She barked, “We don’t care about the river!” storming off.

Rift in Idaho GOP exposed amid multistate water rule lawsuit
Some top Idaho officials are raising alarms after the state's Republican attorney general declined to join a 24-state lawsuit against Biden administration waterway protections. Opponents say the new water rules could impact public and private land across the state. Instead, Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador's office says the state will soon join a lawsuit filed in Texas. He says it's a better fit for the state's interests. The decision surprised some state leaders. Idaho Governor Brad Little recently led the multistate coalition of Republican governors opposing the new rules, which restore federal protection to thousands of small streams, wetlands and other waterways.

House has voted in favor of sticking its head in the sand
The Idaho Legislature took a bold step to improve the efficiency of state government in 1994. Tired of being blindsided by poorly performing programs, the Legislature established an independent, nonpolitical Office of Performance Evaluations (OPE) to evaluate the effectiveness of governmental operations. The Joint Legislative Oversight Committee (JLOC), with bipartisan membership, directs the work of OPE. It has produced outstanding reports, pointing out governmental deficiencies and suggesting options to address them.

Pastors: AI-written sermons have no soul
Among sermon writers, there is fascination – and unease – over the fast-expanding abilities of artificial-intelligence chatbots. For now, the consensus is this: Yes, they can write a passably competent sermon. But no, they can't replicate the passion of actual preaching. Hershael York — a Kentucky-based pastor and professor of preaching — says any sermon written by a chatbot will lack a heart and soul, as well as any sense of grief and suffering. He says lazy pastors might be tempted to use artificial intelligence, but not the ones who love preaching and love their congregations.

Divisive bill on education savings accounts heads to Senate floor
The Senate Education Committee sent a $45 million school choice bill to the Senate floor with a 6-3 vote Wednesday evening. The vote came on day two of public testimony on Senate Bill 1038 — the controversial plan to establish a universal education savings account program. SB 1038 calls for $45 million of state money — a hike from the original $19.4 million estimate — to establish individual $5,950 per-child scholarships for families of K-12 students. That equates to about 80% of the amount allocated to public schools per student. The remaining 20% of funding would stay within the public school system.

Debate gets personal, as Idaho House passes trans youth medical care bill
Two Idaho legislators on Tuesday described how they felt upon learning that a family member was transgender. Their surprise and confusion gave way to acceptance and empathy, they said, as they came to understand what it meant for their loved one to identify as a gender that differed from the sex they were assigned at birth. But when it came time to vote on a bill to make medical care for gender dysphoria in youth a felony, they came down on opposite sides — with one legislator voting with the House Republican majority to ban trans care for Idaho minors, including hormone therapy, “puberty blocker” medications and surgeries.

The Earth has experienced numerous cycles of warming and cooling throughout its history. These past cycles were driven by natural factors such as volcanic activity, changing ocean currents, atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, and the intensity of solar radiation. However, the current rate of warming is extraordinarily rapid compared to historical standards and cannot be accounted for by the aforementioned natural factors. Super Bowl ads will tout Jesus 'gets us' to the masses
On Super Bowl Sunday, advertising's biggest night, religion rarely makes an appearance among the much buzzed about beer and fast-food commercials. But this year, an ad campaign is promoting Jesus' unconditional love to counter the notion that religion is used to divide people. The group behind the "He Gets Us" campaign is spending about $20 million to reach more than 100 million viewers at a time when the nation's Christian population is in decline. Christianity has long permeated the NFL culture, and regular fans are accustomed to expressions of faith, from locker-room prayers to players pointing skyward after touchdowns. Program would provide $8,500 workforce training grants for Idaho students
Following the longest floor debate of the year on Monday, a divided Idaho House of Representatives narrowly passed a bill that would provide $8,500 workforce training grants to Idaho high school graduates to put toward career training. Legislators spent more than two hours debating House Bill 24 straight through their lunch hour before voting 36-34 to pass the bill. Had just one of the 70 members of the Idaho House changed their yes vote to a no, the bill would have failed on a tie vote.

Herndon must be called to account for agenda
It is my own fault. I know better. But, I read Scott Herndon’s “Notes from Boise” on Sunday. (Jan. 29, Daily Bee) In it, he slyly “buries the lead” by placing his main repugnant gem near the end. I respect his right to say what he believes, but how dare he assume that he can legislate his beliefs? In his opinion, there are no reasons to have an abortion. Not incest, not rape, not health - nothing. He is at the very height of arrogance to think that his beliefs are the only ones and to think that he can dictate to us all.
New session brings same challenges for conservatives
A new session of Congress has begun, and unsurprisingly, conservatives face many of the same challenges as we did last Congress. I spent much of the last two years pushing back on the Biden administration’s reckless taxing, spending, and red tape. Faced with the highest inflation in half a century, the worst thing we could possibly do is tax more, spend more, and pile even heavier regulations on private businesses. And yet, that’s exactly what my Democrat colleagues want to do. This Congress, I will once again fight against these disastrous policies.

Lichens, moss, algae on trees? Here's what to know
Now that deciduous trees are bare, you might be noticing the nuances and irregularities on their trunks and branches. For instance, what are those green masses growing on your trees? They could be lichens, moss or algae. And the good news is that none are cause for alarm. Because they usually grow on stressed or declining trees, many people assume these masses are responsible for making their trees sick. Not so. They like to grow on trees that are already ailing or growing in poor conditions. And the growth of lichens is actually a good sign because the organisms will not survive in polluted areas. If you've got lichens, you've got good air quality.

City OKs purchase of Dub's site
Tables amendment to multimodal plan to refine changes
After an extended debate over amendment of the city's multimodal plan, Sandpoint City Council got around to what prompted the discussion — purchase of the Dub's property. After an hour-long discussion over how the purchase might impact the multimodal plan, the council voted 5-0 to approve the purchase of the property from owners Marty and Jeralyn Mire for $385,000. The site would then be leased back to the Mires for an initial period of two years with the option to renew the $500-per-month lease in six-month increments. The couple plan to sublease the business to Ryan and Bethany Welsh, who would run Dub's with the intent to purchase it down the road as well as relocate it when the time comes.

Bill would move audit agency under GOP control
Lawmakers in Idaho have introduced a bill that would eliminate the state's only bipartisan legislative committee and place an independent auditing agency under Republican control. That would be a major change for the Office of Performance Evaluations, which was created in 1994 to review state agency activities and evaluate government accountability. The office isn't very well known outside the Statehouse, but in the past three decades it has produced more than 170 reports identifying millions of dollars in potential taxpayer savings and highlighting gaps and inefficiencies in state programs. House Majority Leader Megan Blanksma presented the legislation to the House State Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

Ireland celebrates 'matron saint' with prayers, new holiday
Devotees in Ireland are marking the feast day of St. Brigid of Kildare. She's a medieval saint who is making a 21st-century comeback. Brigid shares a name and many attributes with an ancient Irish goddess. She is seen as embodying women's empowerment, environmental care and peacemaking in an Ireland that is increasingly casting off traditional forms of Catholicism. Some call her Ireland's "matron saint." St. Brigid is being honored for the first time with an official holiday. That puts her in the company of St. Patrick. Keepers of her legacy are preparing to mark the 1,500th anniversary of her death in 2024.
