A lesson in the value of trees
Please find a different location within the Travers Park complex for the new James E. Russell Sports Center (pickleball/tennis). The planned location requires the removal of healthy shade trees and the demolition of an awesome playground. As a community member, park user, natural resource professional, and taxpayer, I am wholeheartedly against the decision to use state grant money, park budget, and staff resources to build a new playground elsewhere in the park. It is a frivolous use of our budget, time, and resources.

'Dover was the best place to grow up'
Centennial celebrations celebrates community
A historic walk through Dover was held Saturday through the community to mark Dover's unofficial centennial. The celebration marked roughly 100 years from the time the Dover Community Church and just over four dozen homes were barged upriver from Laclede. Also held during the celebration was a boat parade starting in Laclede and ending at Dover. About 15 boats took part in the parade from Laclede to Dover, traveling the route of the homes and church, then A.C. White's rustic summer cabin, when they were barged upriver after the mill owner made the decision. More than 100 community members, residents, and officials gathered for the historic walk, starting at Dover City Hall in the Dover Bay area of the city and ending at Dover Community Church on historic Washington Street, where many of the barged homes ended up.

Iconic churches struggle to accommodate both worship, tourism
With tourism reaching or surpassing pre-pandemic levels across southern Europe this summer, iconic sacred sites struggle to find ways to accommodate both the faithful who come to pray and millions of increasingly secular visitors. A developing strategy is to have visitors and faithful go separate ways – with services held in discrete places, visits barred at worship times, or altogether different entrances. But the challenge remains to ensure the full spaces retain their spiritual purpose. The aim is to make them available to worshippers but also to educate tourists about their history as sacred sites, especially in rapidly secularizing countries where less famous churches are emptying out.

Extremist branch of the Idaho GOP tightens its grip on power
Despite the fact that Idaho is a Republican stronghold and will likely remain such for the foreseeable future, the group that calls the shots for the Party, that wields power over who gets elected, is a small bunch of extremists. GOP chair Dorothy Moon and a group of like-minded culture warriors are working diligently to tighten their control over the entire Republican Party apparatus. Their avowed goal is to eliminate the independent-minded, pragmatic Republicans who believe the role of government is to deal with real problems like property tax relief, improving public education and improving civil discourse.

Alzheimer's drug may slow the disease, but carries safety risk
New research shows another experimental Alzheimer's drug can modestly slow patients' inevitable worsening. Patients given monthly infusions of Eli Lilly and Co.'s donanemab declined about four to seven months more slowly than those given dummy infusions in a large study. If U.S. regulators approve, the drug would be only the second Alzheimer's treatment convincingly shown to delay the mind-robbing disease — after rival Leqembi. Both drugs pose a serious safety concern — brain swelling and bleeding. Lilly's data was presented at an Alzheimer's Association international meeting Monday and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The largest species in its genus, Sword Fern, (Polystichum munitum) is a majestic semi-evergreen native with sword-like fronds (leaves) rising gracefully three to five feet from a central, scaly crown rhizome. The species name “munitum” meaning “armed with teeth,” describes the edges of the alternate leaflets lining the central rib of the frond.

Pair: Recall about politics, not kids
An upcoming recall is a partisan attempt to oust conservative politicians from office, according to pair of West Bonner County School District board trustees. The comments are part of written rebuttals submitted to the county clerk's office by WBCSD board chairman Keith Rutledge and vice chair Susan Brown as they prepare for an Aug. 29 recall election. Why file a lawsuit over deceptive initiative titles?
It is said that you can’t judge a book by its cover, which often turns out to be true, but you have to read the book to learn the truth. However, if the cover is the only thing you ever see, it can give you a false impression as to the content of the book. The same thing happens when voters are asked to sign an initiative petition. The titles, which Idaho law requires to be true and impartial, may well influence whether voters will add their signature to the petition or vote for it on election day. Misleading titles can help sink a worthy initiative. That's why Idahoans for Open Primaries (IOP) has filed suit to change the deceptive titles that the Attorney General’s office conjured up for the Open Primaries Initiative.

Legend of three rodeo riders lives on
I'd like to recommend a book by Rick Steber called “Red White Black: A True Story of Race and Rodeo.” I picked it up in Priest River's library when I happened to notice it on the shelf while browsing near the checkout desk. To quote from the story, “And there it was, three men of different skin colors — Jackson Sundown, a Nez Perce Indian; John Spain, a white man from pioneering stock; and George Fletcher, an African American — were in the finals and would compete for the Northwest Saddle Bronc Championship of 1911. Red. White. Black.”

Recall shows radical agenda in Priest River
Some in Priest River have been driven to fear of change by all the misinformation being spread by Democrat-backed political groups and radical leftist activists that popped up from out of the district to get involved and whip up a frenzy of negativity about Branden Durst and our elected school board, groups like Idaho Moms and activists like Colin Day and the Boise based social media influencer, Socialistlyawkward.

The truth will set you free
When Susan Luckey suggested that the May levy failed because voter turnout was low, she was wrong. The numbers tell a different story. Voter turnout for this last levy ballot measure was significantly higher than it was for the prior levy ballot measure, and pretty much all the increase in turnout turned out against the levy.

Durst will put WBCSD on track for success
Just over a year ago, Bonner County voted almost 2-to-1 to elect Branden Durst as the Republican nominee for Superintendent of Public Instruction for the entire state of Idaho. If you consider that the liberal precincts in Sandpoint had much higher vote totals for his opponent Debbie Critchfield than the rest of the county, it’s likely that Branden’s margin of victory in West Bonner County was even greater than 2:1.

I get that a lot of you don’t like the idea of Branden Durst as the new West Bonner County School District superintendent, and I can see how the optics of his hiring looks. Sandpoint Teen Center finds new home
Seeks community's help to fund renovations, open
That will soon change as STC officials announced they had found a new location — and plans to reopen the center as soon as this fall. Located in the former Mountain Lake Dentistry building, 1323 Michigan, the building is right across the street from Sandpoint high school and middle school. While the location is great, the facility needs to be remodeled from the ground up. While it will involve a lot of work — from plumbing to drywall to painting, STC staff said the site offers the ideal location. It also offers the teen center to give teams from a hangout space to an after-school basketball court to a game room and a full-service kitchen that will allow STC to relaunch its culinary program.

The situation in WBCSD is becoming more infuriating by the hour. The community’s voices are going unheard. The school board has made decisions that are not in the best interest of the children. Attack big medical bills with a plan — and these tips
An enormous medical bill can trigger a wave of panic, but experts say patients should attack the problem with a plan. That startling invoice that arrived in the mail may not be what you wind up paying. Errors or slow insurance payments may have inflated that total. If it's accurate, financial aid or other assistance might be available to pare it. Steps to take include double checking the numbers, potentially seeking outside help and thinking hard about a payment plan. Sometimes a simple phone call can clear up questions. Don't ignore the bill.

Over the last few years, Idaho GOP formulated legislation that has moved toward power over we the people. The West Bonner County School Board is a perfect example of this.
