Pope on Christmas: Jesus was poor, don't crave power
In the splendor of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis was presiding over Christmas Eve Mass. During his homily, the pontiff hailed Jesus' birth in a stable and admonished people against being "ravenous" for power and wealth. He decried war, poverty, injustice and greedy consumerism. Francis encouraged people not to let Christmas pass without doing something good. The pope said there was a "danger" that people forget the real meaning of the holiday. Some 7,000 Romans, tourists and pilgrims attended the Mass. On Sunday, Francis was set to deliver a Christmas blessing and read a message traditionally about the world's trouble spots from the basilica's balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Stick to the actual facts on climate change
In Jack DeBaun’s letter (Daily Bee, Dec. 4), he stated: “In everyday parlance, ‘theory’ commonly means an untested hunch or guess without supporting evidence. But in science, a theory has the opposite meaning. An established scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of an aspect of the natural world based on an abundance of factual evidence. A scientific theory differs from a scientific fact in that a theory explains ‘why’ or ‘how’; a fact is a simple, basic observation. The theory of gravity explains the fact apples fall from trees.”

Children's medicine shortage hits as flu season starts fast
Caring for sick children has become extra stressful for many U.S. parents recently due to shortages of Children's Tylenol and other medicines. Doctors and other experts say the problem could persist through the winter cold-and-flu season. But they say it's shouldn't last as long as other recent shortages of baby formula or prescription drugs. Experts say a spike in demand due to recent rises in respiratory illness is behind the shortages. They also say parents have several alternatives to consider if they encounter empty store shelves. Your doctor may have some suggestions.

Pope warns Vatican staff an 'elegant demon' lurks among them
Pope Francis has warned Vatican bureaucrats to beware the devil that lurks among them, saying it is an "elegant demon" that works in people who have a rigid, holier-than-thou way of living the Catholic faith. Once again, Francis used his annual Christmas greeting to the Roman Curia to put the cardinals, bishops and priests who work in the Holy See on notice that they are by no means beyond reproach and are in fact particularly vulnerable to evil. Francis said Thursday that Vatican bureaucrats are in fact "in greater danger than all others, because we are beset by the 'elegant demon' who does not make a loud entrance, but comes with flowers in his hand."

IDFG: Priest River is a river in need
Not all rivers are created equal, according to Idaho Department of Fish & Game officials. Some, like the St. Joe River, feature a great habitat and reliably cold water, resulting in robust coldwater fish populations, such as westslope cutthroat and bull trout. However, others, like the Priest River, are not so fortunate, T.J. Ross, a communications manager for Idaho Department of Fish and Game. For decades, Priest River has suffered from warm water temperatures during the summer months. Coldwater fish and warm water don’t mix well, and that reality came to a head in July 2021 with an unprecedented fish kill, Ross said.

Lawsuit filed against NIC, trustees and attorney
The former city attorney for Coeur d’Alene has filed a lawsuit against North Idaho College, accusing three trustees and the college’s new attorney of fraud and of violating Idaho’s open meeting laws. Mike Gridley, who retired in March after 20 years with the city, filed the lawsuit Friday in his capacity as Kootenai County taxpayer. The civil complaint names Trustees Greg McKenzie, Mike Waggoner and Todd Banducci as defendants, as well as the college’s attorney Art Macomber. Gridley has asked the court to nullify any illegal actions made by the three trustees and forbid Macomber from practicing law in the county.

Even with revenue collections coming in below forecasts, the state of Idaho is projected to end the 2023 fiscal year with a $1.54 billion budget surplus, according to the last budget and revenue update before the new legislative session starts in January. Idaho’s revenues at this point, almost halfway through the fiscal year, are 7.2%, or $144.6 million, more than they were last December — when the state was building toward the 2022 fiscal year’s record budget surplus.

GOP eyes tighter primary restrictions
New rule would bar voters if they’ve been active with other parties in past two years
Idaho’s primary election is, essentially, the whole contest. With partisan divides that strongly favor Republican candidates, the majority of campaign spending happens in the months leading up to primary elections, and Democrats do not even run for office in many districts. The Idaho GOP closed its primary process starting in 2012, so that only registered Republicans can vote for the candidate they want to advance to the general election — where Republicans dominate so heavily that a primary win often guarantees election to a seat.

Should we put snow on the holiday menu?
While reading a whole bunch of articles about how to have a safe holiday season, I came across a headline that caught my attention. It said, “Is it safe to eat snow?” Now, there’s a subject I’ve never even considered writing about. It reminded me of a movie I watched many years ago about a couple stranded on some remote mountain, ill-prepared for the blizzard-like conditions. They bundled up to walk to safety. I remember little about the film except that the wife was pregnant and kept eating snow. The husband didn’t, and he survived. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that staying in your car is most often the safest choice when faced with inclement weather. They say not to eat snow because it will lower your body temperature, potentially causing hypothermia.

My taxes have gone through the roof
“My taxes have gone through the roof!” This is what I’m hearing from my friends and family. And from my wife and my mortgage company. My own property taxes increased by 27%. My taxable property value increased by nearly 90%. Many of you have seen even greater increases. I’ve had a lot of people say: “What the heck is going on?” and “I thought taxes could only increase 3%.” The truth is, total Bonner County tax dollars did increase by “only” 3% over last year in total, along with the new properties that hit the tax rolls (called “new construction” to be precise). It is the redistribution of them that creates the extreme swings that causes heartburn (understandably).

Idaho students' unsolved deaths prompt rumors, harassment
Investigators have yet to name a suspect in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students who were found dead in a home near campus last month. But would-be armchair detectives and internet sleuths have come up with several of their own, the conclusions often based on conjecture and rumor. Online forums with thousands of members are full of people speculating about possible motives, doxxing the victims' friends and even blaming some for the crime. Julie Wiest is a sociology professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and an expert on violence in media. She says sleuths should remember that online speculation doesn't disappear and could forever link innocent people to a crime they didn't commit.

Devotion to Virgin Mary draws millions to Mexico City shrine
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is one of the world's most visited and beloved religious venues. Its circular, tent-shaped roof is visible from miles away and its sacred heritage draws millions of pilgrims each year. Early December is the busiest time, as pilgrims converge ahead of Dec. 12 feast day honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. To Catholic believers, that's the anniversary of one of several apparitions of the Virgin Mary witnessed by an Indigenous Mexican man in 1531. The COVID pandemic curtailed the number of pilgrims in 2020. Last year, attendance for the December celebrations rose to at least 3.5 million. Bigger numbers are expected this year.

Pausing breast cancer treatment for pregnancy appears safe
A new study is reassuring for women who are taking hormone-blocking pills after a breast cancer diagnosis and want to become pregnant. It finds that they can take a two-year break from these drugs to get pregnant without raising their short-term risk of cancer coming back. The women in the study returned to hormone-blocking therapy after the break. Results of the new study are being discussed Thursday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Breast cancer is more common in older women, but increasingly it's being diagnosed during child-bearing years. Researchers will continue to follow the study participants.

NIC chief communications officer Laura Rumpler confirmed that an unidentified person intentionally pulled the first alarm, while the second alarm was sounded by mistake when an employee tried to reset it. The college is investigating the intentional alarm. Rumpler could not confirm Monday whether a suspect had been identified or if security footage showed the event.

Idaho must once again send the hate mongers packing
Hate and bigotry often lurk just beneath the surface of civil societies. So long as a society is united in disapproving of hateful words and actions, those evil twins remain suppressed. When they receive official approval, they rise to the surface and infect society like a virus. A society must maintain continued vigilance to keep them in check.

Veggies, seafood turn pancakes into special meals
Today, pundits are pushing for a simpler way of living, but I, child of the Great Depression, have always lived it. Lucky me, to have a Norwegian mom and grandma, and a German grandma as well, all of whom were superlative cooks-from-scratch (which was how it was back then) and planted within me the seed to always peel my own spuds, chop and grate my own veggies, and never buy packaged foods!
Merry Christmas and local housing
2022 will go down in history as the Year of Change. A housing market that had been rolling along hit the wall, and all kinds of chaotic forces were unleashed and are still playing out. No pundits, analysts, economists, politicians, government entities or industry participants got it right, and we find ourselves now at a crossroads with both sellers and buyers MIA. It’s as if somebody put sand in the gearbox and the whole thing came to a screeching halt.

It resolves a suit brought by three student members of the Christian Legal Society and the law school professor who serves as their faculty advisor. Stories that share your values
A traditional Jewish saying begins: “Why were human beings created?” Answer: “Because God loves stories.” The truth in that saying goes well beyond the Jewish tradition. For centuries, stories have been the glue that held families and cultures together around the world. As children, we might have snuggled into our parents’ laps to hear stories, or listened to stories as we fell asleep. Parents taught us how to tell stories and so we looked for stories, fictional and real-life, to share with others. I hope you keep finding stories to share.

FDA change ushers in cheaper, easier-to-get hearing aids
It's now a lot easier and cheaper for Americans to get hearing aids. The government recently began allowing the sale of hearing aids without a prescription. These over-the-counter hearing aids began hitting the market in October at prices that can be thousands of dollars lower than prescription hearing aids. They are for people with mild-to-moderate hearing problems — not those with more severe hearing loss. The Food and Drug Administration estimates that around 30 million people in the United States deal with hearing loss. Only about 20% of the people who could use a hearing aid seek help.

COVID's lingering impact prompts Real ID deadline extension
The deadline for obtaining the Real ID needed to board a domestic flight has been pushed back again, with the Department of Homeland Security citing the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for the slower-than-expected rollout. The deadline to have a Real ID had been May 3, 2023, but DHS announced Monday that it was pushed back to May 7, 2025. People are getting compliant IDs as they renew driver's licenses, but DHS said the pandemic resulted in backlogs at state driver's license offices. Because of the backlogs, many state agencies that issue driver's licenses automatically extended expiration dates on licenses and ID cards, rather than issuing compliant licenses and cards.

It has also grabbed the attention of thousands of would-be armchair sleuths, many of whom are posting speculation and unfounded rumors online. The department wrote in a Facebook post Thursday evening that all the speculation is stoking community fears and spreading false information.

Half-empty Idaho campus full of fear, grief after killings
In a normal year, University of Idaho students would be bustling between classes and the library, cramming for finals and looking forward to winter break. But on Wednesday a little less than half the students appear to have switched to online classes after four of their classmates were stabbed to death. Blaine Eckles is the university's dean of students. He hopes candlelight vigils set to be held across the state tonight will offer some temporary comfort amid grief and fear. The killings remain unsolved, and police have not yet named a person of interest in the case. Idaho Gov. Brad Little is directing $1 million in emergency funds toward the investigation, and the FBI has 44 agents assigned.

The best gift you can give is to be vaccinated against the flu
When the leaves start changing colors and there’s a cold breeze in the air, we begin to think of fall and spending time with friends and family as the holiday season nears. What we don’t have on our minds is the beginning of the respiratory illness season, such as influenza, and the importance of getting your annual flu vaccine. This is important because we will be spending time with people that are at high-risk of developing complications from respiratory infections, especially in people 65 years and older.
