School safety a priority for WBCSD

School safety is and has been a priority of the board and staff of the West Bonner County School District. As a former WBCSD trustee (2013 to 2022) the district has spent over $600,000 toward facility safety improvements including improved door locks, alarms, cameras (including Bonner County Dispatch access), beacon light system, intercom systems, replacing doors, perimeter fencing, single point of entry access through buzzer, and many other continuous safety improvements to all school buildings.

Pope Francis has decided to give women the right to vote at an upcoming meeting of bishops. It is an unprecedented change that reflects Francis' hopes to give women greater decision-making responsibilities and laypeople more say in the life of the Catholic Church. Catholic women's groups have hailed the decision as historic. Francis approved changes to the norms governing the Synod of Bishops, a Vatican body that gathers the world's bishops together for periodic meetings. The Vatican on Wednesday published the modifications he approved. For decades, women have demanded the right to vote at synods, the next of which is scheduled for October.

Court denies request to lift gag order in Idaho killings

The Idaho Supreme Court has turned down a request by 30 news organizations to lift the gag order in the criminal case of a man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death. The unanimous court did not weigh in on whether the gag order violates the First Amendment rights of a free press, but instead said the news organizations should have first brought the request to the magistrate judge handling the criminal case. Bryan Kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths in Moscow, Idaho. The gag order prohibits the attorneys, prosecutor's office, law enforcement officials and others involved with the case from talking to the news media.

WBCSD levy provides critical funds for our students

My husband and I went over our 2022 Bonner County Assessor tax document. Our land and home were assessed at a total market value of $343,343. The home exemption was $125,000, (for 2023 is $150,000), making our net market value a total of $218,343. The amount of $218,343 is what our taxes are based on.

Study: Milder autism far outpacing 'profound' diagnoses

A new, first-of-its-kind study shows the rate of profound autism is rising in the U.S., though those cases are a smaller share of all autism diagnoses. Autism diagnoses in U.S. kids have become increasingly common, but health officials have noted the growing ranks of autistic kids has gradually included children with milder symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention led the research. The authors find that the rate of profound diagnoses grew to about 5 cases per 1,000 kids in 2016. But the rate of kids diagnosed with milder forms of autism grew much faster — to 14 per 1,000.

When my son was in the fifth grade, he participated in an accelerated reading program to elevate learning and thinking. A group of parents - activated by a national network - protested the program and convinced the principal to ban the books. One of those banned books was “The Hobbit”.

Former state trooper charged with murder

A former Idaho State Police officer has been charged with killing his wife. Daniel Charles Howard, 57, of Athol, was arrested Friday night and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2021 death of his wife, 48-year-old Kendy Howard. Jail records indicate that Daniel Howard also faces a felony domestic battery charge.

Regarding the upcoming Bonner County Library Board election, some have argued that a change of leadership is needed. But I beg to differ. Given the strife that libraries across the state have experienced, including our own, we need stability, not change.

The "Night at the Derby" event, set for Saturday, May 6, will be an evening to remember, Rotary member Amy Bean said. The evening will begin with a signature cocktail provided by the 219. The local logging collaborative with their approval of devastating logging and roadbuilding projects like Chloride-Gold and Buckskin-Saddle has re-ignited local and regional opposition. The Inland Empire Task Force is concerned about these logging projects. Logging of these watersheds dries out landscapes, increases fire risk, produces sedimentation and exacerbates rain on snow events. Evapotranspiration rates increase as plantations grow, removing ground water that supplies critical bull trout and harlequin duck habitats.

Recent rains, snow help watershed

Recent spring rains and late snow have helped the area's watershed, Idaho Lakes Commission officials said recently. "We need [the rain and snow] to keep the watershed full, the rivers flowing, the groundwater replenished, and so much more," Molly McCahon, Lakes Commission executive director, said in a recent update. "Every year the hydrology in the Pend Oreille Basin varies, but there are some general patterns and dates you can expect, just do not bet the farm on these."

Orthodox Easter mixes spiritual and pagan in equal measure

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Millions of Orthodox Christians across eastern and southern Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere in the world have celebrated Easter. The most important holiday on the Orthodox religious calendar is essentially an outdoor celebration, with equally intense spiritual and pagan parts and religious services followed by feasts, familial and communal. Some customs may predate Christianity, but new ones, or variations of the old, constantly evolve. In an Athens neighborhood, younger parishioners have added petrol bombs to the customary launching of flares as soon as the priest intones "Christ has risen" at midnight on Saturday. Easter is also the occasion of a mass exodus from big cities to the countryside.

Longtime postal worker set to retire

She is not, Carol Sue Hanson freely admits, a morning person. But, each morning at 5 a.m., Hanson is hard at work at the Sandpoint post office, sorting mail and ensuring packages get to where they are headed. However, the longtime postal worker will soon be able to sleep in a little longer as she is set to retire Friday, April 28 after more than 37 years on the job.

Council OKs Division Ave project's first phase

Construction set to start in mid-June

The first phase of the Division Avenue corridor improvement project got the green light from the Sandpoint City Council on Wednesday. In a unanimous 6-0 vote, the board approved the project's scope of work, and directed city staff to finalize construction documents. The project would then go to bid. The city expects to award the bid in May, with construction set to start after June 12 when school is out for the year. It would be completed by Sept. 1 before school resumes.

Bonners Ferry to vote on local option tax

At the Tuesday May 16, election Bonners Ferry residents will hit the polls to vote for a local option tax of 1% on taxable goods to fund the Bonners Ferry police department, fire department, street crews and snow removal.

Understanding oral cancers and the need for early detection

A report from the Oral Cancer Foundation dated March 29 of this year says that “every hour, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year someone dies of oral or oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the back of the oral cavity and upper throat). Yet if oral cancer is detected and treated early, treatment-related health problems are reduced and survival rates may increase.”

Many people don’t realize when they purchase a beautiful plant for their garden that it may be listed as an invasive species and, therefore, should not be planted. West Bonner County is not alone as we face this challenge. While we are not the only school district facing this challenge it is our responsibility as community members of the West Bonner School District to share our voice by casting a vote on May 16, 2023.

Sagle Road project moves forward

Work on the Sagle Road intersection will take another step forward next week. Idaho Transportation Department officials said the road will be closed Monday, April 24 as part of an effort to widen and realign the roadway. Shea is the best pick for library board

Most of us recognize that the Sandpoint and Clark Fork branches of the East Bonner County Library District are remarkably innovative and vibrant gathering places. The highly functional volunteer board is to be congratulated for making this so – particularly in the contentious environment of the past few years. Their mission is to provide access to opportunities for discovery, connection, and lifelong learning. They’ve expanded programming while reducing costs to the taxpayers – not an easy task and an unpaid one at that.

Area gas prices inch upward

While Idaho drivers saw a slight bump in gas prices this week, AAA officials said that doesn't compare what's happening elsewhere in the country. The average price for a gallon of regular in Sandpoint ranges from $3.64 to $3.69, according to GasBuddy. The average price for a gallon of regular in Bonners Ferry is $3.59. In Coeur d'Alene, the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.52.

Festival launches new music outreach program

The Festival at Sandpoint is helping students make musical magic as part of its new Pre-K Outreach Program. Since its launch last spring, more than 70 students at Selkirk School and Little Lambs Preschool have taken part in the program, which teaches them to play instruments. In the program, students learn how to play six different non-pitched percussion instruments, count and read rhythms, and play parts within a group.

Although on paper it seemed like a blowout, the match was closer than the score reflects. Sandpoint fought hard for every single point.

Each year, the Selkirk Association of Realtors gives thousands of dollars to local groups in need of funding for their community service-oriented projects and programs in Bonner and Boundary counties. Last year, the association awarded more than $25,000 to individuals and groups in the two counties.

AG: Small businesses should ignore compliance solicitations

Attorney General Raúl Labrador and Secretary of State Phil McGrane are warning Idaho’s small businesses about misleading ads offering business compliance filings including certificates of existence or UCC statements. The mailings, which demand large fees, look like government forms and include deadlines to create a false sense of urgency. Idaho businesses rarely, if ever, need the advertised documents, and if they do, they can obtain them directly from the Secretary of State.

Tax relief deadlines nearing

Tuesday is the last day for certain homeowners and veterans with disabilities to apply for relief from their 2022 property taxes. Applications must be submitted by that date. New this year, Idaho homeowners can apply online at tax.idaho.gov/proptaxrelief. They’ll need an email address. They also can get paper applications on the Tax Commission’s website at tax.idaho.gov or from their county assessor.

Judge affirms Selle Valley rezone

Controversial request changed zoning from AF-20 to AF-10

A district judge has affirmed a Bonner County Commission decision to approve a 714-acre rezone request in the Selle Valley, ruling critics had not proven their claims that their due process rights were violated. “The evidence does not support a finding that the board's interpretation and application of its zoning ordinance was arbitrary, capricious, or discriminatory,” District 1 Judge Barry McHugh wrote in the ruling issued last month. “On the contrary, the board provided additional opportunity for the submission of input on the decision. Further, the decision was based on substantial evidence in the record … [and] the court finds that the conduct of Commissioner McDonald did not deprive Petitioners of their due process rights.”

Novel treatment shows promise against rare cancer in kids

A novel treatment using supercharged immune cells appears to work against tumors in children with a rare kind of cancer. Researchers reported the finding Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. Nine of 27 children in the Italian study had no sign of cancer six weeks after treatment, although two later relapsed and died. The treatment is called CAR-T cell therapy. It's already used to fight leukemia and other cancers in the blood. Experts say this study in children with neuroblastoma is the first time the therapy has worked well in solid tumors. That raises hopes that it can be used against other kinds of cancer.

WBCSD outlines replacement levy

The West Bonner County School District will be running a replacement supplemental levy. The measure, which will be on the ballot on Tuesday, May 16, must pass with a 51% voter approval. The proposed levy amount is $4.7 million per year for two years which is roughly 33% of our annual operating budget. This will replace the current levy ending June 30, 2023, Susie Luckey, interim WBCSD superintendent, said.

Coeur d'Alene Police released the names Monday of the men involved in a fatal incident that occurred Friday outside a shopping center. James Dean, 74, Priest River, was identified as the man who shot a suspected car burglar in a parking lot outside retail stores on West Canfield Avenue, Capt. Dave Hagar said. Shane Ryan Brown, 30, Sandpoint, died at the scene.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill into law Wednesday that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion without parental consent. The law is the first of its kind in the U.S. and creates a new crime of "abortion trafficking," barring adults from obtaining abortion pills for a minor or "recruiting, harboring or transporting the pregnant minor" without the consent of the minor's parent or guardian. Meanwhile, health care providers are suing over the state's interpretation of another abortion ban because the attorney general says it prohibits doctors from referring patients across state lines.

A day to remember with Selkirk Powder

Those who stuck around Sandpoint during the winter months know what a magical season it was. From November to April the mountain accumulated 292 inches of snowfall—The depth of four cars parked side by side. Thanks to this, Schweitzer opened up early for the first time since the 2017-18 season. As a new resident of the Sandpoint community, I was eager to lap up as many days on the mountain as possible. With 2,900 acres of skiable terrain that features incredible tree skiing, I couldn’t wait to see what the upper left had to offer.

Annual Lions Club event begins at 9 a.m. sharp at Lakeview Park

The Sandpoint Lions' annual Easter egg hunt is today, April 8 at Lakeview Park, located at Ella and Ontario in Sandpoint. The fun starts promptly at 9 a.m. with the hunt typically lasting five or six minutes at the most. This year, there are six age groups: crawlers (1-2 years), located by the train car; 3 years old, located by the Sandpoint Lions Club building; 4-5 years old, located by the playground equipment; 6-7, located along the edge of the park along Ontario Street; 8-9 years old, behind the tennis courts; 10 and up, at the arboretum.

Pope washes feet in Holy Thursday rite

Pope Francis has washed and dried the feet of 12 residents of a Rome juvenile prison in a Holy Thursday rite symbolizing humility. Ten male and two female residents each removed a shoe so Francis could bend over, pour water over one bare foot and then dry with a plain white towel. The ritual recalls Jesus' washing the feet of his 12 apostles at their last supper together before he was crucified. Some of the 12 whispered in the pope's ear after they shook and kissed his hand. House fails in library bill veto attempt

On the final day of the 2023 session, the Idaho House of Representatives narrowly failed to override Gov. Brad Little’s veto of a controversial bill that would have prohibited libraries from providing “harmful materials” to minors. On Wednesday, Little vetoed House Bill 314, writing in a letter to legislators that the bill’s ambiguity would lead to unintended consequences for libraries and their patrons. Little also called out a section of the bill that would have allowed minors, their parents or guardians to sue for $2,500 for a violation of the bill.

And, if you're looking for a little help, the Idaho Department of Water Resources is in town to help residents file claims for the Clark Fork-Pend Oreille River Basin Adjudication. The last in a series of workshops is today, April 6 at the Ponderay Events Center, 401 Bonner Mall Way, Ponderay. The workshop is from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. IDWR staff will serve the public on a first-come, first-served basis to answer questions and help people file water rights claims in the basin. To avoid longer wait times, IDWR staff recommends avoiding peak busy periods around 8 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m.

Obesity in the U.S. military surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent research shows that nearly 10,000 active duty Army soldiers became newly obese between February 2019 and June 2021, after restricted duty and limited exercise led to higher body mass scores. Increases were also seen in the U.S. Navy and the Marines, renewing concerns about the fitness of America's fighting forces. The solutions are the same as for civilians, experts say: Recognize obesity is a chronic disease and provide targeted treatments that include diet and exercise and new medications.

Superbug fungus cases rose dramatically during pandemic

U.S. cases of a dangerous fungus tripled over just three years, and more than half of states have now reported it. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wrote about the infections. They say the COVID-19 pandemic is likely part of the reason for the spread. Hospital workers were strained by coronavirus patients, and that likely shifted their focus away from disinfecting some other kinds of germs. The fungus is called Candida auris. It's a form of yeast that is usually not harmful to healthy people but can be a deadly risk to fragile hospital and nursing home patients. Some strains are so-called superbugs that are resistant to antibiotic drugs.

Hard cleanup: Montana train derailment spills beer and clay

Crews could face a difficult task cleaning up a 25-car train derailment in western Montana that spilled numerous cases of beer as well as powdered clay beside a scenic river. Authorities say the derailment happened Sunday in a hard-to-reach spot beside the Clark Fork River. Some of the cars derailed in a tunnel with very little clearance. Montana Rail Link spokesperson Andy Garland says the only access is by traveling on the blocked train tracks or taking a boat across the river. Numerous cases of beer spilled on the river bank and a tanker car carrying butane ended up on its side, but did not leak. No injuries were reported.

Annual walleye netting set to start soon

This spring marks the sixth year of netting operations on the lake by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to help keep the walleye population under control. IDFG officials said the netting operation will begin next week on Monday, April 10 and run through April 28. Walleye gill netting operations take place on weekdays only over a three-week period each spring. Fish and Game officials said crews target walleye grouping up to spawn in the shallow, northern sections of the lake. Among the sites identified for netting sites are portions of the Clark Fork Delta near Sheepherder Point, the Pack River Delta, Sunnyside area, Oden Bay, Kootenai Point and in the vicinity of the railroad bridge near Sandpoint.

Community's treatment of superintendent is concerning

I was shocked and saddened to be informed that our West Bonner County School District superintendent, Jackie Branum, had resigned, and why. In a district where the high school principal stated that one of the most concerning subjects to parents is bullying, our parents set an example for their children by bullying into resigning, a kind-hearted lady whose worst sin was caring enough about the residents and students of our school district to try to change things for the better.

Low-growing perennials serve as living fences

I recently offered some ideas for hedges as property line borders, separation of the garden/home landscape into “rooms,” and as useful dividing lines between veggie or ornamental gardens. Tall hedges were the point, for their efficiency in maintaining privacy is a “must” for some. You can, however, achieve the same separation of areas — if privacy is not an issue — with lower-growing borders that offer more options for floral/leafy beauty and other considerations such as fragrance, variety and ease of removal (transplanting) if you change your mind after time.

Judge considers motion to undo Swayne decision

A court hearing Friday morning revealed that North Idaho College attorney Art Macomber appears to have widened the scope of his investigation into Nick Swayne’s employment agreement. The new details emerged while Judge Cynthia Meyer heard arguments as to whether she should undo her order that restored Swayne to his position as active president while his lawsuit seeking permanent reinstatement proceeds.

As such, Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane will join AARP Idaho for a statewide telephone town hall on April 4 at noon MT to discuss these issues as well as other topics important to older Idahoans. Just one day after it passed almost unanimously in the House of Representatives, the Senate State Affairs Committee printed House Bill 374 and sent it to the Senate floor Thursday afternoon where it passed in a 26-7 vote.

The Idaho Senate this week had a tremendous opportunity and seized the day.

Man sentenced in assault case

A man charged with attacking a process server attempting to give him paperwork in connection to a Washington state case was sentenced last month to reduced charges after agreeing to a plea deal in the case. As part of the plea deal, Darryl William Thorn, 38, agreed to pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace and a misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of property. Thorn was sentenced in early March to 180 days for the disturbing the peace charge, which had been amended down from an original charge of felony assault. In addition, Thorn was sentenced to 217 days for the misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of property to be served at the same time as the disturbing the peace charge.

DNA technology solves 41-year-old mystery

Montana woman identified

( ▶️ Audio story available.) Mildred Hubertz was 59 when she went missing from St. Ignatius, Mont., in 1968. In November 1982, hunters near Newport, Wash., — an almost four-hour drive from the small town 40 miles from Missoula — found a partial human skull in a remote wooded area north of the small Pend Oreille County community. Friday, Pend Oreille County officials announced the skull was Mildred's — a discovery they said was made possible through investigative genetic genealogy.
