These are vaccines to treat existing disease but preventing cancer before it starts is another line of vaccine research. Bashing messengers doesn't change the reality
When a messenger warned Armenian king Tigranes that Roman General Lucullus was mounting an attack against him, Tigranes had the messenger beheaded. He killed the messenger because he didn't like the bad news. Some who deny the adverse impacts of climate change have adopted a similar “kill the messenger” attitude toward climate scientists. In response to warnings about global warming, deniers have resorted to ridiculing, stigmatizing, and vilifying scientists who are delivering messages they don't want to hear. Incidentally, Tigranes lost the battle decisively to Lucullus.

Report: Contractor collected interest off taxpayer funds
The Idaho State Board of Education is still working to unravel a scope of issues with the Empowering Parents grants, intended to help low-income and middle-class families offset educational costs. On Wednesday, the board discussed one significant problem. Some taxpayer-funded grants — designed to help parents pay for laptops, learning materials and other out-of-pocket education costs — instead covered items such as smartwatches and cleaning supplies.
Judge narrows, doesn't lift gag order in slayings case
An Idaho judge has denied a request from roughly two dozen news organizations to lift a gag order in the criminal case of a man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death. The judge did, however, significantly narrow the gag order in response to the news organizations' concerns. The ruling in Bryan Kohberger's case was handed down late Friday afternoon. Second District Judge John Judge said it was legally prudent to restrict attorneys from making some statements about the case in order to preserve Kohberger's right to a fair trial. Still, Judge also said the original gag order was arguably overbroad and vague.

High court upholds Festival firearm ban
The Idaho Supreme Court unanimously affirmed a lower court decision on a four-year lawsuit challenging a ban on firearms during the Festival at Sandpoint’s summer music series. "This appeal concerns whether a private party that leases public property from an Idaho municipality may govern those who come and go from its property during the lease," Justice John R. Stegner wrote for the court. "The short answer is yes." The ruling, which was issued Thursday morning, affirmed a First District Court ruling that found the Festival at Sandpoint has the right to set rules for those entering Memorial Field during the two weeks it leases the field for the summer music series. Among those requirements is a ban on attendees possessing weapons inside the venue.

Biochar workshop registration due Friday
To maintain an acceptable fire risk, logging and thining slash must be treated or eliminated. This is often done by piling and burning slash, which costs time and money, and generates greenhouse gases. Slash treatment costs could be off-set by converting slash to biochar, a type of charcoal produced from plant matter and stored in the soil. Biochar can improve soil nutrient and water-holding capacities and contribute to many other benefits on both forest and agricultural lands. Biochar is relatively stable and can persist in the soil for hundreds or even thousands of years – aiding carbon sequestration.

Heart transplant method could lead to more surgeries
Most transplanted hearts are from donors who are brain-dead, but new research shows a different approach can be just as successful and boost the number of available organs. It's called donation after circulatory death, long used to recover kidneys and other organs — but not more fragile hearts. Then a few years ago surgeons started "reanimating" hearts in a machine that shows they can pump properly after that type of donation. Duke Health researchers found six-month survival was similar regardless of the donation method. The findings were published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

A lawyer for one of the victim's families has also made that argument in the case set to be heard Friday. But prosecutors and the defendant's lawyers insist it's needed to prevent prejudicial news coverage that could damage Bryan Kohberger's right to a fair trial.

Bank failures, FDIC and our collective delusion
Silicon Valley Bank. Signature Bank. First Republic Bank. Three high-profile bank failures in the last two months. What’s going on? A bank fails when the value of its assets is less than the value of its liabilities, the obligations the bank owes to its depositors. Each of these three banks experienced a run on deposits: clients withdrew their deposits because they feared they wouldn’t be able to get their money out, creating a snowball effect that within 24 hours decimated the banks’ reserves.

Women often use hormone therapy to relieve hot flashes and other menopause symptoms — and new research suggests whether they choose pills, patches or creams might matter for their blood pressure. Women are more prone to heart disease after menopause and high blood pressure is one key risk factor. Canadian researchers tracked records of 112,000 women who used estrogen-only hormone therapy. Those taking oral estrogen were more likely to develop high blood pressure than those taking versions absorbed vaginally or through the skin. The findings were published Monday in the journal Hypertension.

Account shows Washington's faith, dedication
Published in 1800 by the Rev. Mason Locke Weems, a firsthand account of the "Father of our Country": In the winter of ’77, while Washington, with the American army lay encamped at Valley Forge, a certain good old friend, name of Potts, had occasion to pass through the woods near headquarters. Treading his way along the venerable grove, suddenly he heard the sound of a human voice and became like the voice of one speaking much in earnest. As he approached the spot with a cautious step, whom should he behold, but the commander in chief of the American armies on his knees at prayer! Motionless with surprise, Potts stood still, until the general, having ended his devotions, arose, and with a countenance of angel serenity, retired to headquarters: friend Potts then went home, and on entering his parlor called out to his wife, “Sarah, my dear! Sarah! All’s well! All’s well! George Washington will yet prevail!”

I think his emotional screed is personal, not political. His characterizations are false. I’m writing to set the record straight.

The honor, presented at a Lake Pend Oreille School District transportation meeting in mid-May, caught Det. Joseph Kaufman by surprise. He thought he was just there to report on the issue. Stop arm violations — drivers who either don't see or ignore the warning lights advising that students are either entering or exiting a school bus — are a frequent problem, James Koehler, Lake Pend Oreille School District transportation director, said.

Duo reigns on last day with a little horsepower
This is one horse tale that will go down in school lore. After all, it isn't every day that students forgo driving their car or taking the bus for a different kind of horsepower — one that comes with four hooves and a tail. But that is exactly what seniors Kelly Whitney and Taylor Peck did, opting to take advantage of an archaic Idaho law that allows students to ride to school.

Mural movement transformed walls into art
A century ago, artists in Mexico began transforming walls into works of art, fueling the country's burgeoning muralist movement. To honor those artists and their work, a former Jesuit college in Mexico City is hosting an exhibition that showcases the significance of this monumental movement. Experts say muralism arose in a highly politicized context, and many of the wall paintings criticize political leaders, inequality or the Catholic Church. At the time, the young muralists were influenced by revolutionary nationalism and academic scholarship that transformed their ideas about the country's Indigenous population. Some artists expressed their social and political views by painting divine figures or religious references.

Crude oil, products will always be needed
One of the significant facts that seem to be overlooked in the current efforts to abolish the use of petroleum-based fuel is that asphalt cement, a byproduct of the oil refining process, is used to pave the 2.6 million miles of roads, streets and highways in the United States. Asphalt cement is a byproduct of the petroleum refining process and without asphalt cement our roads, streets, highways and airports would become unusable within the ensuing 30 years.

What’s that, once proud Grand Old Party?
In early February of 1941, following the fall of France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium to Hitler’s marauding armies, as young (average age 20) British spitfire and hurricane fighter pilots continued to drive Luftwaffe bombers from the skies over London and other U.K. cities, and as Hitler’s armies ravished what remained of free Europe, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt sent British Prime Minister Winston Churchill a poem by Longfellow which Roosevelt said: “applies to you people as it does to us.” The verse: “…Sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O Union, strong and great! Humanity with all its fears, with all the hopes of future years, is hanging breathless on thy fate.”
