House passes ban on assault weapons

The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday passed a ban on semi-automatic firearms — the weapons used in multiple mass shootings during the last three months — on a near party-line vote. With the 217-213 vote, the bill, H.R. 1808, will head to the evenly divided Senate, but it’s unlikely to advance there, as the ban would need all Democrats on board plus 10 Republicans to get past a filibuster. New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader, has not announced if he plans to bring the weapons ban to the floor for a vote.

Death of Post Falls man cited in opening speech at governors meeting

The death of a Post Falls man who died in a helicopter crash while fighting a fire was cited as motivation for federal and state governments to do all they can to minimize forest fires. Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture, said the loss of 41-year-old Thomas Hayes of Post Falls and 36-year-old Jared Bird of Anchorage “emphasizes the important work that we have to do to try to reduce the risk of wildfire. “It's obviously a very tragic circumstance and situation and I just want you to know our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the families of those who have been lost," he said.
