Camp Bay beach issue remanded to commissioners
M3 first petitioned the county in 2021 to vacate the last half mile of the road for a private subdivision. County commissioners initially approved the application, agreeing with the company’s contention it would benefit the public. The controversial decision prompted a huge public outcry and a Sagle couple filed suit over the decision. In their legal filings, Fred and Jennifer Arn claim that Camp Bay Road actually ends at the historic highwater mark of Lake Pend Oreille, and ergo, provides for public access to the lake. The commissioners cited their inability to make a legal determination on the location of the end point of the road in their February vote to deny M3’s petition. That February hearing came after their prior hearing was overruled by District Court and the matter was remanded back to the commission, who then punted to the court, who has now returned the punt back to the commissioners.

The creek accounts for more than half of the annual bull trout spawning sites in the Pend Oreille Basin, a species protected as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. A 2019 permit authorized work on the Idaho Club Trestle Creek Marina, with Corps officials saying permit authorization did not extend to other portions of the project because a sufficient connection between these activities and activity requiring a Corps permit was not found.

May peace prevail on earth
Perhaps you’ve noticed the local Community Peace Garden at 417 N. Fourth Ave. in downtown Sandpoint. Years ago, members of First Presbyterian Church removed the chain-link fence. This opened the lawn area of the church yard. A design was created, Sandpoint Rotary built a gazebo, benches and picnic tables were added, fruit trees and bushes were planted, and raised garden beds now grow food for those who are hungry. The space is like an outdoor sanctuary, and many people read by the Little Free Library, or eat lunch at round picnic tables, or find a shady spot on a hot summer day. People make use of this space every day.

Political payback? One wealthy donor may have influenced GOP primary defeats
Campaign finance complaint alleges Larry and Marianne Williams over-contributed to candidates by thousands of dollars
When three Idaho senators spoke out against a charter school bill earlier this year, it sparked what they say was an aggressive effort to unseat them that was partly driven by one wealthy businessman who is the subject of a recent campaign finance complaint. The complaint, filed on Aug. 24 by a Nampa resident who is not employed in politics, alleges that Boise resident Larry Williams over-contributed to 14 legislative candidates by thousands of dollars, under his own name, his wife’s name and the names of four of his businesses. An elections official confirmed the contributions appear to have violated campaign finance laws, but said it’s up to candidates to handle incoming funds in ways that comply with the law. The Idaho Secretary of State’s office has not contacted Williams about the complaint.

Bonner County is facing many critical land use issues that need our immediate attention. Developers are convincing the commissioners to give them the end of Camp Bay road and our lake access at no cost, so they can turn around and sell that land for millions of dollars and gate out the public. The term urban water has been mysteriously defined as a shared private well, so that areas zoned suburban can now be subdivided into one-acre parcels without adequate services, paving the way for urban sprawl. We have commissioners who are spot zoning on request and claiming, without evidence, that there is no legal basis for the current 20 acre minimum zoning that preserves our rural areas.

More people than ever are getting new organs every year. But more than 100,000 others are awaiting their turn, and critics point to policies and errors that waste organs and cost lives. LPOSD celebrates constitution day
Two-hundred and thirty-five years ago, on Sept. 17, 1787, the Constitution of the United States of America was signed by 39 delegates in Philadelphia. Following this, founders worked alongside states to create solutions that would allow for the Constitution to become ratified. The compromises with states like Massachusetts resulted in ratifying 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution in 1791 – known as the Bill of Rights. The result has led to the longest-standing constitution in the world (in use). Today is Constitution Day, a federal observation aimed at honoring and celebrating the privileges granted to the people of the United States. In our modern age, there is value in reflecting on this supreme law of the land. Lake Pend Oreille School District celebrated yesterday with our students through a variety of lessons, activities, and observances throughout the district. But as the sun broke through the clouds and smoke, so too the Ridgeline Falcons broke the bulldog’s defenses and win the game in the last minute with the only point scored during the match. The first half was a dynamic slug match between two teams. “The first half was the best half this team has played,” head coach Connor Baranski stated after the game. The Bulldogs were able to apply pressure on the opposing team and frustrate their attempts to move the ball forward, while still being able to make plays and run the ball into Ridgeline’s defensive end. John Paul I, 'smiling" pope, is beatified
Pope Francis has beatified one of his predecessors, John Paul I, a briefly serving pontiff who was distinguished for his humility and cheerfulness. The ceremony in St. Peter's Square on Sunday constitutes the last formal step in the Vatican before possible sainthood for Albino Luciani, an Italian who died in 1978, 33 days after being elected. Last year, Francis approved a miracle attributed to John Paul I — that of the recovery of a critically ill 11-year-old girl in 2011 in Buenos Aires. Seated under a canopy outside St. Peter's Basilica, Francis led the ceremony, punctuated by thunder and lightning. Francis encouraged the faithful to pray to Luciani to obtain "the smile of the soul."

County planning update needed
I speak to our communities, if you’re concerned about land uses, seemingly fast-tracked approvals for unpublished minor land divisions that mimic subdivisions, and a zoning code that does not reflect the comprehensive plan. Then the time to speak up is now. It is time that the County Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code be fully revised, be responsible and reflect the will of the people and future generations.

Panhandle fire update for Sept. 15
With the recent precipitation which moved through the panhandle, wildland fire crews received some much-needed help on the many firelines they are currently working. As of Sept. 14, Idaho Panhandle National Forests Fire Public Affairs officer Kary Maddox explained that there are four major incidents that crews are still working to contain and control. The largest incident, collectively known as the Kootenai River Complex, comprises both the Katka and Russell Mountain Fires that continue to burn northwest of Bonners Ferry. To the southwest of that complex, just across the Idaho/Washington border, the Diamond Watch Fire continues to burn and send smoke into the panhandle. On the Idaho/Montana border in Shoshone County to the east/northeast of Murray, crews also continue to fight both the Columbus and Bear Gulch fires. With the smoke from the local wildfires combining with smoke from larger fires in the southern areas of the state, air quality for much of the panhandle has hovered between the Moderate and Unhealthy categories for several days. Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry spent much of Wednesday in the Unhealthy and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, causing the cancellation or postponement of numerous outdoor activities...

Recreation proposal will hurt region's wildlife
The North Zone Winter Recreation proposal, developed by a collaboration of pro-motorized recreation groups will severely impact the ESA listed grizzly bear, and Canada lynx, candidate whitebark pine, and wolverine along with wolves, fisher and winter range. Actions of the Idaho Conservation League and Friends of Scotchman Peaks are indefensible. They support snowmobiles mowing down whitebark pines and high marking, impacting grizzly bear and wolverine denning habitat and bear year (when grizzlies are out of their den) snowmobiling in the Roman Nose and Moose Lake areas. This will harm female grizzlies with cubs. They stay near their snow-covered den sites after they emerge. Friends of Scotchman Peaks has a goat ambassador and yet supports this proposal that displaces traveling goats.

I feel compelled to talk about cycling in this town and the conundrum that is “motorists who are too nice.” When I am stopped on my bike in the street at an intersection with a stop sign, where vehicles are crossing in both directions with no stop sign, those vehicles have the right of way. I must wait until traffic is clear from both directions to cross. It’s no different than if I were a car. If I approach a stop sign and there is no traffic, I am allowed to proceed cautiously through the intersection without stopping according to Idaho bike laws (ID Code Chapter 49 Title 7).

They don’t answer the questions that torment us, and they don’t confirm that we’re right about what we already think. What the teachings do offer is wisdom, but this good thing is always bought at the price of some discomfort. The human appetite for wisdom, and its tolerance for discomfort, has never been great, in ancient times or ours. (Excerpts from "The Socratic Method – A Practitioner’s Handbook" by Ward Farnsworth)

A quest for an active old age
A growing number of scientists is trying to help people reach a goal humans have been chasing throughout history: staying active and vital in old age. They are part of the skyrocketing scientific field of cellular senescence, which is built upon the idea that cells eventually stop dividing. The body removes most of them, but others linger like zombies, not quite dead and harming normal cells nearby. They accumulate in older bodies, and mounting evidence links this to an array of age-related conditions like dementia, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Scientists wonder: Can the zombie cell buildup be stopped through things like drugs or exercise?

Simple, they are afraid of people seeing truths that they have denied for decades.

In general, the person or party making an argument has the burden of proof to justify it (whether they argue that something is true or false).” (https://fallacyinlogic.com/burden-of-proof-fallacy-definition-and-examples/)
