Where are we and how is the Panida?
That first trip across the Long Bridge was all it took to fall in love with Sandpoint. It was also easy to see, two years ago this month, as I drove downtown to get to my interview that the Panida Theater was the heart of Sandpoint. At that time, I was being hired to replace a director that had been on the job less than a year, who had been hired to replace the stalwart, much admired Karen Bowers, who had retired after 26 years. In many ways, Karen Bowers had become the heart of the Panida. Conversely, the Director I replaced had made some changes that seemed to reverse the positive flow of community support that had been a necessary reality of the Panida since 1985. After all of the many years of consistent successful fundraising for the Panida, his six month experiment in reducing movies, and productions, and increasing expenses for a focus on rentals by businesses had created a void, where previously there was heart. My early goals included revitalizing the heart and respecting the mission. My first forays in trying to keep our valuable venue energized and returning the intended mission included re-engaging community input, bringing important movies back to the Panida with increased showtimes, re-purposing the underutilized Little Theatre, expanding concessions and managing the newly added beer and wine license. This step involved improved and expanded relationships with movie distribution companies, exploring additional showtimes including matinees. In addition to the Global Film Series we brought in some classic movie showings, a youth series and expanded the variety of offerings, introduced a dinner theatre series, brought in high speed internet to offer streaming of live shows of world class productions, and added low cost venue days/prices to non-profits as a way to spur venue rentals on traditionally slow nights, all while keeping prices for services as low as we could in spite of the vendor costs having increased.

The American voter has an extremely difficult choice in this fall’s election. There is “crooked” Hillary Clinton. I believe her reprehensible record as Secretary of State, which has been given a very liberal coat of “white wash,” has already proven Hillary to be unfit to be president. Hillary is irresponsible and incompetent, with a flagrant disregard for national security — proven by Hillary’s use of an unsecured email server to transmit classified material, which is a felony. Hillary is also responsible for the results of the Benghazi embassy attack, by not authorizing military action to defend the embassy, which is U.S. territory.
Traffic in the USSR growing more STUPID
The recent article in the Bee about the $5.1 million grant to improve Highway 95 from Coeur d’Alene to Highway 53 states that the Idaho Transportation Department anticipates an increase of traffic along the corridor from the present 34,500 cars per day to 49,000 in 2035. That is an increase north of Coeur d’Alene of 42 percent in 19 years. Those projections also apply here in the U.S.S.R. — Undeniably Scalar Sandpoint Realm. Scalar is a mathematical term meaning “having a quantity but no direction” — a term that the engineering department is plagued by but unfortunately unfamiliar with. Realm is used because “republic” implies a functional government and “realm” has become synonymous with a fantasy land.

The state of Idaho’s Federal Affordable Housing and Community Development program’s public notice on the new National Housing Trust Fund program in a recent Daily Bee is indicative of a big problem we have within our republic and the demise of federalism. The title alone should give pause to anyone who understands the concept of federalism. (A form of government in which there is a division of powers between two levels of government of equal status.) This plan reads like there is a division of power — but in fact, it is more submission to the edicts of Washington, D.C., as we mere peasants scramble for a place at the federal trough.

Distracted, confused or diverted? That is what FBI Director James Comey is hoping for. But, we’re not that ignorant or stupid — are we? Did Hillary Clinton commit a felony? We know that ignorance of the law, or lack of intent, does not let you off the hook. If you are legally drunk and strike someone with your vehicle, you have committed a felony. And Comey made it clear that there was an insurmountable mountain of proof of Clinton’s “gross negligence” of “very sensitive, highly classified information.” In other words, the gross mishandling of classified information regarding our national defense. This would be a crime for anyone else. But, he let her off the hook, because he found lack of clear proof of intent.

When it comes to eating a healthy, balanced diet, a person who has easy access to a supermarket that offers fresh fruits and vegetables might not have to look further than their own will to decide to prepare a healthy meal. But for someone who might only have a convenience store nearby, healthy food choices might be scarce or non-existent.
Remember to hydrate in order to feel great
“We’re walking less than three miles on a trail, I don’t think we’ll need any water,” was the answer to my question before we set out the other day. But, to make a short hike long, we got a little lost. When all was said and done we hiked/walked over five miles uphill the whole way in blistering heat. Well, that’s an exaggeration. But, what isn’t is that when we got home we both gulped downed eight ounces of water before you could say “H2O.”

The Bonner County Commission is considering substantial changes to the county’s land use code. Title 12 of the code was revamped in 2008 after exhaustive public discussion and broad input from the various stakeholders — taxpayers, land planners, developers, political leaders, etc. It was a remarkable process of give and take, contention and compromise. Land use planning is all about protecting and promoting a community’s collective vision for how our county will look years and decades from now. We don’t all agree on that vision but, in 2008, we came together and then put together a land use code that worked for the vast majority of us.
