Mask wearing does little to keep people safe
I was recently reading an article from your paper that asked for a person who did not wish to wear masks to write a letter to the editor. The simple answer should be science. Since the largest coronavirus particles are .14 microns in size, and even an N-99 mask only filters particles .3 microns or larger, the masks are not able to protect anyone from the virus.

City’s park system is a Sandpoint legacy
Friday, Aug. 7, marked the grand opening of the long-awaited Memorial Field project. This project had been envisioned by many residents for years. Since 73% of the Sandpoint voters approved of the local option 1% tax in 2015, the city has been laser-focused on completing project within the window of the five-year levy that expires on Dec. 31. I’m very proud of this accomplishment, I’m proud of our team at City Hall, and I’m proud of all the user groups and citizen volunteers that have contributed to this vision. Not only was this project the most robust capital project ever taken on by the city, it was in some ways one of the most difficult challenges politically.

Youngster may teach us how to care for each other
He’s all of 9 years old. Been in foster care for six years — moved around too many times to count. Has a younger brother who got adopted last year — without him. I wonder what that felt like — to be left behind. We in families see our share of sibling rivalry — who’s the favorite? — but to be cut off from your only connection with family amid a sea of strangers? Must have been awfully lonely on that life raft.

Sandpoint’s activist mayor should do his job or step down
I am weary of Sandpoint’s activist mayor, Shelby Rognstad, using his office as a self-righteous bully pulpit. Rognstad’s multiple, sanctimonious proclamations have been nothing but divisive. His latest, in a city-approved proclamation — an alignment with the Love Lives Here movement — is inappropriate. Love Lives Here sounds good on paper, but when you take the time to examine the words and actions of those involved with the organization, you’ll see that the Love Lives Here crew is filled with the intolerant and hate-filled.

We live in a “pick your expert” society, If one wants to discredit someone about something, an expert can be found. Most letters to the editor that offer opinion on current issues cite various experts , scientists, or “the scientific community.” The opinions are cited as though there are no opposing ones. Increased sewer rates in Sandpoint? Oh my!
How can the city officials even consider raising sewer rates in the event an $11 million sewer plant is ever needed? Our present high sewer rates are outrageously ridiculous and with our overpayment each month, the city has accumulated such a surplus in sewer funds, to purchase property behind the Panda Theater, help build a roundabout at the end of Boyer, and help finance the downtown beatification project. I wonder — is this a misappropriation of funds? Anyway without any more outside projects, surely there will be enough excess sewer funds to cover any additional sewer projects, for years to come.

It’s time to THINK before we spout off
A common local’s conversation starter is “what brought you to Sandpoint?” My standard answer was “a big lake, a big ski hill, and a small friendly town.” Sadly, I must change my answer; we are no longer the friendly town of just a few years ago. What has become of us? We shout at each other for wearing masks, we don’t care about other peoples’ health, we value our personal convenience over the well being of our neighbors, and we disguise it all as righteous liberty. We have armed vigilantes in our streets and many people are so paranoid that they carry a gun everywhere.

Lack of courtesy may put mask-use issue into court
Will someone who believes that wearing a mask into the library or any other establishment disenfranchises them please write a letter to the editor of this paper explaining how you came to believe that and what your logic supporting that belief is based on. All my life society has made and enforced rules, laws, and regulations to protect itself from people intentionally or otherwise doing harm to other people. Sometimes the point of a rule is just to prevent people from offending other people. No shirt, no shoes, no service comes to mind.

Wearing a mask doesn’t infringe upon your rights
Several things have become sadly evident. People who resist wearing a mask exhibit a deep sense of grievance, a lack of generosity, absence of personal responsibility and, perhaps most importantly, overwhelming ignorance. How can they ignore the facts of COVID-19-caused illness and death across our Panhandle communities and across the country? Their display of resistance at the East Bonner County Library was another egregious effort to undermine the safety and security of our city. Wearing a mask does nothing to impinge upon your rights.

Greene’s Gripe: We need sports now more than ever
SANDPOINT — Practices for fall sports in Idaho begin next Monday, but it sure doesn’t feel like it.
We’ve now entered into the Twilight Zone
I must have missed the signpost up ahead, because I have obviously entered the Twilight Zone. Looting has become rationalized as just a protest. Defending your property has become a crime. Pride in your country has become racist. Some of the scum of humanity have been memorialized. Entertainers have become philosophers. Socialism/communism have become a beacon of utopian life. Before I entered this zone, there was a Democrat that said “Ask not what your Country can do for you, but what you can do for your Country”. I have evolved from being disappointed to disgusted. There is a difference between intelligence and wisdom. When you are listening to the news, and it’s presented with an abundance of adjectives and adverbs, you are being spoon fed a description to program your opinion. You are being indoctrinated. And worse yet, our education system has become rampant with being taught what to think, rather than how to think. The teachers think it is normal because they were taught that way. (I have more than numerous examples to prove that statement.)
