A few things to know about WBCSD
A few things to know on West Bonner County School District.
WBCSD board elections critical for district
Nov. 7 is getting closer. It's an immensely important day for the West Bonner County School District. By now, most of you know who you're voting for. The most important thing is to get out and vote. Since this is an off-year election, many of you will think it's not that important this year. You couldn't be more wrong. It's absolutely critical for the school district. If we don't vote for good, caring, and qualified candidates, we will be going backward again. We must do so in massive numbers. It's the only way to achieve victory.

Citizens must demand voice in city government
Please see what is happening in your city offices. We citizens have zero voice. We have been completely shut out of any opportunity to participate in the governance of our town. We have been saddled with an expensive administrator whose apparent goal is to create a flashy resume. Where does a mayor's job end and an administrator's start in a town the size of Sandpoint?
Initiative letter fell short of goal
We're all in this together, and I can certainly do better.

A month after transplant, man works to regain strength
The second person to receive a transplanted heart from a pig has reached the one-month mark and a hospital video shows he's working hard to recover. The University of Maryland School of Medicine released the video Friday showing Lawrence Faucette pushing through physical therapy to regain muscle strength necessary to attempt walking. Last year, the Maryland team transplanted a heart from a genetically modified pig into another patient who survived just two months. This new experiment is part of a quest for animal-to-human transplants to one day ease a shortage of human organs.
Program aims to boost minority transplant surgeon numbers
A novel program in Tennessee aims to interest more Black and other minority medical students in organ transplants, to help ease troubling disparities. Six students from Meharry Medical College spent the summer shadowing specialists at Tennessee Donor Services for hands-on lessons in recovering organs, matching them to recipients — and the empathy needed to work with grieving families. Thousands die awaiting a transplant because there aren't enough donated organs and some don't get a fair chance, including Black Americans. Whatever their career paths, the students say they plan to educate others about organ donation.

Respiratory therapists help you breathe a little easier
For most of us, breathing is as normal as, you know, breathing. Unless we’re running or doing yoga, we don’t tend to think much about it. That is, of course, if we have healthy lungs. Voters should 'West Bonner' extremist candidates
The voters of West Bonner County School District are still working to clean up the wreckage caused to their school system by a board of trustees inspired by the Idaho Freedom Foundation (IFF). A low turnout election in 2021 resulted in a three-person school board majority that seemed to be intent on turning the WBCSD schools into right-wing indoctrination mills. Among other things, the board tanked the district’s finances, caused havoc with the schools and turned a deaf ear to parents’ concerns.

Reinbold protecting children, bringing fiscal accountability
Troy Reinbold has faithfully served as a West Bonner County School District board trustee for the past four years. He was the only board trustee during the COVID pandemic who voted against forcing students to wear masks to school. He is for protecting students and believes parents alone should make medical decisions for their children. Troy wrote the current WBCSD gender policy, which keeps males out of female bathrooms and locker rooms. He has heard this is the strongest gender policy in the state.
Vote Schreiber, Ruehle, Duquette for Sandpoint council
There are three honest, hard-working candidates running for Sandpoint City Council.
Vote Pam Duquette for city council
The current Sandpoint City Council has failed to do its job, which is to represent the people of Sandpoint. They say they want community input, but when they get it, they choose to ignore it. We need city councilors who will actually listen and act on what the people want.
Hall is the right pick WBCSD Zone 1 seat
As a board member for Zone 1 in the West Bonner County School District, incumbent Margaret “Margy” Hall is thoughtful, respectful, and informed, an asset to the school district and to the community.
Schreiber is best pick for council
To start, I want to say that Kyle Schreiber will make a good city councilor, and we should all support his run. I don’t think it’s any secret that a lot of us have felt disconnected from the process of city business in the last couple of years.

America's nonreligious are a growing, diverse phenomenon
Ask Americans what their religion is, and nearly 1 in 3 say this — none. That's according to the U.S. adults surveyed by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. They're called the "nones" — not religious sisters, but N-O-N-E-S. Other surveys show they've been growing steadily for the past 30 years. Half of the nones call themselves atheists of agnostics, but another half just say they're "nothing in particular." Many believe in God, heaven, prayer, astrology, karma or reincarnation. But the nones really, really don't like organized religion. They span class, gender, race, ethnicity and age. More than 4 in 10 young adults are nones. Researchers say that's a sign they'll continue to grow.

Where is the Sandpoint we have known, loved?
Many of us have taken our children — and our grandchildren — to the play area at Travers Park. We watched them play in the shade of the beautiful trees that flourish there. I can’t believe that the City of Sandpoint is about to take that away! They will cut down the trees to put up a building for pickleball and tennis courts. It will accommodate about 16 people. None of them children.

Inspiration helps craftswomen weave sacred textiles
In the middle of the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile, the colors and patterns of Aymara textiles are inspired by the land that is considered sacred. The craftswomen learn the trade in childhood. The weaving techniques, animal raising and devotion for "Pachamama" (or Mother Earth) have been passed on from grandmothers to their descendants for decades. Today, there's concern that migration and development may threaten the ancestral knowledge that has rooted the Aymara cultural identity to the land.

Boosting health literacy falls on more than just the patient
The responsibility of understanding what a healthcare professional is saying during a visit to the doctor's office falls on more than just the patient. That obligation to ensure individuals can access and comprehend basic health information in order to make health-related decisions is shared by the doctor, nurse, health insurance provider and even public health officials – perhaps even more so than the patient, said Dr. Michael Paasche-Orlow, a primary care physician and vice chair for research at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Keep to the facts on Open Primary Initiative
Every time I look at the opinion page of the Daily Bee, I see a concentrated letter-writing campaign designed to promote the newest woke left effort to disenfranchise conservatives.
Let's pack the stands for soccer championships
Every time I walk into Memorial Field for a Sandpoint High School football game, I get a huge, heartwarming feeling of community pride. I am amazed at how we, such a small community, can overfill the stands in support of our football team.
Open Primary Initiative would benefit all Idahoans
I appreciate the front-page article on the Open Primary Initiative in a recent Daily Bee. However, I am confused and disappointed about the “conversation” that was part of the headline. A conversation usually includes more than one voice. Approximately 80% of the article came from the biased perspective of Scott Herndon.
If Herndon cared about voters, he'd sign the petition
Here’s a hot take: the open primary initiative will actually strengthen and heal our political parties, not destroy them (regardless of what Scott Herndon and Dorothy Moon say).

Stalin would defeat Lincoln in rank-choice voting
Rank-choice voting is how dark money and mob rule subvert democracy and defeat “values voters.” The rank-choice system turns red states purple, then purple states blue. If you doubt this, simply look where RCV is active. It is how Alaska’s house seat went from a Republican (R-Don Young) to a far-left extremist and activist (D-Mary Peltola) in one election cycle. To see how this works, read on.

Roughly 50-75 people turned out for the protest, held shortly before the city's council meeting and filling the small courtyard at the front of Sandpoint City Hall.

This column is primarily for you who are not quite 65 but need to start thinking about Medicare.

Open primaries will give us better government
In reading Rep. Scott Herndon’s long and skewed explanation of the Open Primary Initiative, I wondered if he is against it because he may not be elected under this system. Why? Because open primaries give more people the chance to vote in the primary election. People who are currently not affiliated with a political party will be allowed to vote. That’s about 270,000 Idaho voters.

FDA advisers vote against experimental ALS treatment
Federal health advisers have voted overwhelmingly against recommending approval of an experimental treatment for Lou Gehrig's disease, the fatal muscle-wasting disease. The panel of Food and Drug Administration experts met Wednesday to review a stem cell-based therapy that has been at the center of a years-long lobbying campaign by patients. The FDA initially refused to review the therapy, but drugmaker Brainstorm filed its application against the agency's recommendation earlier this year. FDA leaders will make a final decision on whether to approve the treatment later this year. In a review published ahead of Wednesday's meeting FDA called the company's application "incomplete" and "grossly deficient."
Caring for a child with ADHD
Every child will squirm and fidget. Every child will have moments where they’re not paying attention. And every child will have a time when they can’t control their impulsive behavior. However, when these behaviors become pervasive and persistent and interfere with their lives, that child just might have ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder).

Candidates must focus on what's best for students, community
What the West Bonner County School District needs: financial help, a solid plan for future junior high students, and to retain skilled employees. What WBCSD doesn’t need: to be a political pawn in a game that parents or students who are served by the district do not want to play. The focus needs to be on the needs of our students, not clickbait, non-issue terms like: woke/liberal agenda, indoctrination, critical race theory, and social emotional learning.
Grimm would accelerate end of city's uniqueness
When I played high school football here back in the 1980s, Cotton Barlow’s legacy was still a big part of Bulldog sports. Along with Jerry Kramer, Sandpoint’s only NFL Hall of Famer, he expanded every local’s sense of potential. If you read his story, you’ll soon learn that he spent summers growing his shoulders and work ethic of buckin’ bales in Bonner County hayfields. I was lucky to get in on that before round bales and auto loaders made such work obsolete.

One of the delights of the holidays is the opportunity to show affection and appreciation for those we love. The privilege of working with those dedicated to public service
Some folks have a hard time understanding why people would devote an entire career to serving the public when private employment generally pays more. You might have to put yourself in the shoes of a career public servant to gain an understanding of what motivates them. I had that privilege when I began 8 years as Idaho Attorney General in January 1983. What caused me to reflect was a recent obituary of such a person.
