Utilities: Fire prevention requires close attention to conditions
The interaction of electrical lines and the landscape around them, especially trees, often ends badly; it can cause power outages any time of year, but in the summer in particular, it can cause fires. Keeping fires from happening requires close attention to power lines and the areas around them, and that’s not just a summer job.

Then, big holes in our ozone layer, we will all die from solar radiation. Then the glaciers are melting, all the polar bears will die, and all our coastal cities will be flooded. Now it's global warming and climate change.

Initial WBCSD forensic audit delayed
SOS non-profit filing draws concern
Initial results from a forensic audit of the West Bonner County School District have been postponed as the auditing firm waits for additional documentation. However, as of Aug. 25 — the date Eide Bailly planned to deliver the report — some of the data needed had yet to be given to the firm. Also, a Secretary of State filing listing the district as a non-profit has raised concern that some on the WBCSD board are attempting to convert at least part of the district into a charter school. District officials said that is not the case and is merely an effort to move the audit forward.

Ancient Christian mosaic's possible move sparks concern
An ancient Holy Land mosaic inscribed with an early reference to Jesus as God is at the center of a controversy that has riled archaeologists. Should the centuries-old decorated floor, located near the prophesied site of Armageddon, be uprooted and loaned to a U.S. museum that has been criticized for past acquisition practices? Israeli officials are considering just that. The proposed loan to the Museum of the Bible in Washington also underscores the deepening ties between Israel and evangelical Christians in the U.S, whom Israel has come to count on for political support, tourism dollars and other benefits.

It’s just another item in a long list of screw-ups that have plagued this district since he was hired. Vote no on the recall
The folks supporting Keith Rutledge’s and Susan Brown’s recall believe that replacing Mr. Rutledge and Ms. Brown will enhance the performance of an institution that has consistently delivered mediocre results. Their argument is that the Christian worldview of these individuals is no longer valid and that it is inevitable to introduce LGBTQ-plus, transgender, and queer ideology in schools.
Recall and replace the Priest River leftists
Recall Keith Rutledge and Susan Brown. Despite the fact that both were legally elected, have traditional family beliefs and standards, are well-qualified, and are working hard to improve the failing academic standards, focusing on raising students’ ability to read and write at appropriate age levels and raising students’ math and history proficiency. Add to this, Susan and Keith have the audacity to want our schools to provide a safe learning environment, encourage parental rights and input, and introduce financial transparency and budget accountability.

It's up to us; vote yes on recall
"If it's to be, it's up to me." That's a quote that I read a long time ago that has always stuck with me. I don't know the author, so I can't give credit, but I feel it really applies to all of us now. Meaning we have to get out to vote on Aug. 29. We can't depend on the other person to do it. We have to do it ourselves. This is so very critical.

Stem cells from one eye show promise in healing injuries in the other
A new study shows a promising procedure to treat severe injuries in one eye by using stem cells from the other. Results of the early-stage research were published Friday in the journal Science Advances. Researchers take a small biopsy from the healthy eye, grow and expand the stem cells in a lab and then transplant them into the injured eye. Four patients in the study got the transplants. The first person to undergo the procedure was a man from Alabama who suffered a chemical burn that left him blind, unable to tolerate light and gave him frequent headaches. He's now able to see well enough to drive.

1 dead, 185 structures destroyed in eastern Washington wildfire
A fast-moving wildfire in eastern Washington state has destroyed at least 185 structures, closed a major highway and left one person dead. The blaze started on the west side of Medical Lake, a town west of Spokane, at about 12:30 p.m. Friday. That is according to a Washington State Department of Natural Resources spokesperson. The fire grew to 14.8 square miles by Saturday morning, with zero containment. The burned structures were a mixture of homes and outbuildings. Spokesperson Isabelle Hoygaard said Saturday evacuations were ordered for the town as winds blew the flames south. It burned through the south side of the town and then jumped Interstate 90 Friday night, forcing its closure. It remained closed in both directions Saturday.

Poll: 70% of U.S. adults believe in angels
Compared with the devil, angels carry more credence in America. They even get more credence than hell. More than astrology, reincarnation, and the belief that physical things can have spiritual energies. In fact, about 7 in 10 U.S. adults say they believe in angels, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The widespread acceptance of angels made sense to one angel expert because they are malleable to an array of worldviews. Angels mean different things to different people. For example, the idea of loved ones becoming heavenly angels after death is neither an unusual belief nor a universally held one.

BCRCC has much in common with communist countries
Previous to the Idaho Republican Party this year and their county central committees, the only political parties I am aware of that enforced adhering to their platforms were communist in Russia, China, and North Korea. Platforms here used to be aspirational: a guide for voters, candidates, and electeds for generally what to expect. Censuring and excluding some electeds from the party is alarming.

DMV visit filled with kindness
Everybody has a Department of Motor Vehicles story. After my recent trip to the DMV in Priest River, I looked up cartoons about this much-maligned place of business. There's one with a sour-faced woman, arms crossed, hair in a tight bun titled, “Atilla the DMV employee.” Another ends with, “Now go to the end of the line to make a new appointment for a month from now. And no, I never smile. I was born angry.”

The difference money can make in education
A student’s zip code can make a big difference in their education. It comes down to this: Some communities are wealthier than others, and are more willing and able to spend on education.
