Poll: Religious service attendance a bit down after pandemic
A "stable share" of Americans has participated in religious services in some way – virtually or in person – during the coronavirus pandemic, but in-person attendance is slightly lower than it was before the COVID-19 outbreak. Those are among the key findings in a comprehensive report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center on how the pandemic affected attendance at U.S. religious services. It surveyed more than 11,000 U.S. adults in November of last year. Researchers said the report could not analyze the attendance patterns of Buddhists, Hindus Muslims, and other smaller non-Christian religious groups due to sample size limitations.

Road project attracts interest, questions

Those were the two biggest questions that came up during a pair of open house events Wednesday held by the city of Sandpoint to gather input on the project. With the road home to everything from schools to senior living facilities, Division has become a major pedestrian hub. And, since the roadway is also the city's designated truck route, the number of conflicts — and safety concerns — have grown in recent years.

Driving to distraction: A larger view
Before writing yet another letter on individual bills coming before the Idaho Legislature, I'd just like to point out that the bills are coming so thick and fast that letter writers don't have time to research or digest them. Governor vetoes property tax bill
Little: ‘Needs to be simple’ not a ‘hodgepodge’
Idaho Gov. Brad Little vetoed a major property tax bill on Monday, calling on the Idaho Legislature to bring him a new bill and get the property tax issue right. Little vetoed House Bill 292 after expressing several concerns about elements of the bill unrelated to property tax reduction. Little opposed a section of the bill that would eliminate the March election date local school districts use for bond issues and levy elections. Little also said the bill jeopardizes bonding for critical infrastructure projects and funding for transportation initiatives.

Where is the care for Idaho's women?
The government provides the means to improve the lives of those it represents. It is not their job to dictate to others what "they" believe. Besides, how moral it is to require that all women must carry their child to term no matter the circumstances? Mr. Herndon, from what I understand, wouldn't even allow an abortion if it meant saving the mother's life.

Why the religious fast for Ramadan, Lent and other holy days
Fasting across religions is practiced for a wide range of reasons that include spiritual purification and self-discipline. Muslims are welcoming the start of Ramadan, a month of fasting, increased worship, heightened charity, good deeds and community. Christians are also fasting during Lent, the 40-day period of penance and prayer ahead of Easter. In Judaism, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar involves a 25-hour fasting period that's coupled with prayers for forgiveness. Fasting is also an important part of Jainism. It is viewed as a way to cleanse one's body, including one's bad karma or actions. In Hinduism, fasting is not an obligation, but a voluntary act of spiritual purification.

How to shop for new insurance if you lack Medicaid coverage
Medicaid will end for millions of Americans in the coming months, and that pushes many into unfamiliar territory: the health insurance marketplace. States will start cutting people from the government-funded coverage when they no longer qualify based on income, a process that has been paused since shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The timing of these cuts will vary. But all states have insurance markets where people who lose Medicaid can buy new coverage with help from subsidies. Shopping for insurance that covers regular doctors and prescriptions can be daunting. But experts see several steps to make it easier.

Ex-intern sues Idaho lawmakers for harassing her after rape
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A former legislative intern is suing a lawmaker convicted of raping her and one of his colleagues for releasing her name and launching a harassment campaign. The woman, who uses the pseudonym "Jane Doe" in the federal lawsuit, was just 19 when she reported that then-Rep. Aaron von Ehlinger raped her at his Boise, Idaho apartment in 2021. In the lawsuit, Doe says von Ehlinger and former Rep. Priscilla Giddings retaliated by releasing her name and lying about her. Doe is seeking unspecified monetary damages. The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted. Neither Giddings nor von Ehlinger could be reached for comment.

Hedges offer beauty, privacy and enhancement
Many years ago, Valle wrote of hedgerows — the type that once bordered cultivated fields in the U.S. and still exist in great numbers in the British Isles. Today, I tone down that beautiful practice into a very practical land-scape planting consideration, hedges.

'Stranger at the Gate': Love after hate
Angry and filled with hate for Muslims, Richard McKinney once wanted to plant an explosive device outside the Islamic Center of Muncie in Indiana. The interactions with congregation members and the kindness that the tattooed veteran has encountered helped change not just his plans, but his life's course. That story of transformation and improbable bonds is chronicled in "Stranger at the Gate," which is nominated for best documentary short film for the 95th Academy Awards. Director Joshua Seftel calls it a story of love conquering hate. Seftel says his inspiration for telling tales about Muslim Americans that defy negative stereotypes is rooted in his memories of the antisemitism he's encountered, especially while growing up.

Both victims deserve both support, compassion
A pair of recent letters criticized Herndon and the government for attempting to legislate their “beliefs” about abortion (Daily Bee, Jan. 29 and Feb. 7), but aren't these critics imposing their own “beliefs” on what government ought or ought not to legislate? We don’t have a right to impose our beliefs through laws on others? That’s like someone arguing ‘You can’t force your anti-slavery beliefs on other people through laws against slavery.’ The pro-abortionists has no qualms about imposing their morality on the unborn. Surely a loving God doesn’t give you that right.

Can't take statins? New pill cuts cholesterol, heart attacks
In a major study, a new kind of cholesterol-lowering drug helped people who can't take the first choice, pills called statins. Researchers tested the drug Nexletol in those hard-to-treat people and found it reduces the risk of heart attacks and other cholesterol-caused problems. Doctors already prescribe the drug together with a statin for certain high-risk patients. But people who can't or won't take statins because they sometimes cause muscle pain have limited alternatives. The research was published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology.

Weather-related closures and the LPOSD
In North Idaho, we are not strangers to cold temperatures or snow! We also have a culture of speaking out about our opinions. This is a good thing! However, I have been shocked by the tone and coarseness of some parents in the last two weeks, who have had strong feelings about the district’s decision to remain open. I want to empower and remind parents — ultimately, you are in charge of whether or not your children attend school in inclement weather. Bill allowing execution by firing squad heads to House vote
Idaho could bring back firing squads as a method of execution under legislation introduced by a panel of lawmakers Wednesday. The state eliminated its never-used firing squad option in 2009, but has been unable to secure the drugs needed for lethal executions. Only Mississippi, Utah, Oklahoma and South Carolina currently have laws allowing firing squads if other execution methods are unavailable, but a judge has put South Carolina's law on hold until a lawsuit challenging the method is resolved. The bill from Idaho Republican Rep. Bruce Skaug would allow firing squads to be used when lethal injection isn't available. Idaho canceled a planned execution last year when prison officials couldn't obtain lethal injection drugs.

Climate change is a real, growing problem
As early as 1968, fossil fuel companies made a concerted effort to conceal the risks that their products posed to the environment. By the 1970s, Exxon's own research showed that the combustion of fossil fuels was contributing to global warming.

Extremist GOP legislators are at it again, attacking our public libraries
The claim that Idaho librarians are dispensing pornography and other harmful materials to kids fell flat last year, but extremist GOP legislators are attacking once again. Nobody has been able to provide evidence that our librarians are handing out smut to kids, but that is beside the point. The issue has been popular amongst culture warriors across the country, so it should be good for some political mileage in Idaho.

House bill reflects troubles at North Idaho College
The Idaho House Education Committee introduced a bill Monday that could change the State Board of Education’s role over community colleges. The bill, presented by Rep. Lori McCann, R-Lewiston, grants the State Board emergency authority over a community college facing accreditation loss. Specifically, the State Board can step in if an accrediting organization threatens to revoke a college’s accreditation, has taken steps to do so, or if the State Board deems a college in danger of losing accreditation due to severe financial crisis.

FDA: Oat and soy can be called milk
Draft U.S. rules would allow soy, oat, almond and other drinks that bill themselves as "milk" to keep using the name. The Food and Drug Administration says plant-based beverages don't pretend to be from dairy animals and U.S. consumers aren't confused by the difference. Dairy producers have called for the FDA to crack down on the use of the term milk. The rules released Wednesday also call for voluntary extra nutrition labels that note when the drinks have lower levels of nutrients than dairy milk. In recent years, the number of plant-based drinks has exploded to include dozens of varieties, including cashew, coconut and hemp.

Senate kills controversial school choice bill
A divisive education savings account (ESA) bill died in the Idaho Senate on Monday afternoon — in a 12-23 vote that came after over two hours of floor debate. Senate Bill 1038 would have established a universal education savings account program, providing $5,950 scholarships to students who are homeschooled, or attend non-public schools. The money could be used for private school tuition and fees, uniforms, textbooks and other education-related expenses.

Pennsylvania unseals search warrant in UI killings
Law enforcement officials seized dark clothing, medical gloves, a flashlight and other items from a Pennsylvania home where they arrested a graduate student charged with stabbing four University of Idaho students to death. That is according to newly unsealed court documents. The records were made public Tuesday, two months after Pennsylvania State Police arrested Bryan Kohberger at his parents' home in eastern Pennsylvania. Kohberger, a 28-year-old doctoral student at Washington State University, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary in connection with the stabbing deaths in Moscow.
