Work continues on county road projects

Overseeing a county road operation has some remarkable resemblance to surviving as a small farm operator. You take stock of the conditions in the spring, as mud squishes under your boots, then begin to make plans for strides forward during the warm months of summer. As summer ends, you take stock of the progress you made and realize that your harvest of work completed is not as large as expected — equipment break downs, weather disturbances and work details taking longer than ever imagined.

Paperwork stands in our way of helping

My friend nearly lost her life because she fell into the Medicaid gap. Along the way, she was required to fill out paperwork for an application for financial “help” from the county. Tens of pages of information. And they gave her three whole days. The hospital told her that they could not accept her for emergency surgery until the county had approved her application (which was for a loan, not a hand-out). Meanwhile, she has children and runs a day care center serving our small community. One small experience that shows that paperwork requirements are not about helping people who already work with their health and do nothing to keep people working, or even alive. Paperwork stands in the way of communities helping each other.

Sheriff needs to stick to the job he was hired to do

Am I reading this correctly in Saturday’s Daily Bee that Sheriff Daryl Wheeler and Bonner County are suing the city of Sandpoint for allowing the Festival of Sandpoint to prohibit firearms at their annual concert series. Why the heck does anyone need to bring a firearm to one of the Festival’s concerts in the first place unless they are one of those whackos who plans on shooting a lot of people. My feeling is that unless you are wearing a badge you have no business bringing a gun to one of these concerts. What do you think you are doing, protecting yourself from one of the entertainers?

Later in the season — some market schedules ran through October — if it was an early set up it would still be dark when I arrived at the bakery to load up the bread. There was just something about driving up to the little shop all lit up, with music blaring out the open door, and the scent of fresh baked bread hanging in the air.

There is desperation in Jack DeBaun’s letters on climate change. De Baun prefers insult to reason when attempting to refute those with differing opinions. He feigns adherence to science yet ignores the provable fact that while climate change is an ongoing process which has existed for millions of years, it is not in the present day caused by man.

Farewell delta extraordinaire Kathy Cousins

We just learned that our local delta restoration expert, Kathy Cousins, will be leaving Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) for a new and exciting career opportunity. This is sad news for us and the fish and wildlife of the Clark Fork/Pend Oreille Basin, but on the bright side, we know she will doing great work wherever she goes. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kathy and her work, she is known for her groundbreaking work on the restoration of the Pack River Delta and the Clark Fork Delta. Both deltas provide exceptionally valuable wildlife habitat, and both were experiencing extreme erosion and habitat loss, beginning with the construction and subsequent operations of Albeni Falls and Cabinet Gorge dams in the 1950s. We have counted on and appreciated Kathy’s expertise and updates for ten plus years now, in our efforts to let the community know about restoration work benefiting the Pend Oreille Basin.

American Heritage Wildlife Foundation began the paperwork in 2001. By 2002, had received 501(c)3 and nonprofit incorporation status and became the only wildlife rehabilitation facility with federal and state permits allowing care of most every species of wild animal in the panhandle of Idaho. AHWF holds both state and federal permits. This allows rehabilitative care of the injured and orphaned local birds (long term of waterfowl, songbirds, groundbirds & short term of large raptors), all nongame mammals (squirrels, raccoons, weasels, etc.), reptiles (turtles, lizards) and amphibians (frogs, salamanders). Additional federal and state permits allow the use of animal artifacts as teaching items at our educational programs including the soon to open Nature Walk — a guided pathway experience.

LBGT issues and our schools and libraries

Did you know that the tax/bond money you spend on your library funds a group called National Librarians Association that requests your library hold “transvestite story hour” during which men dressed as women read LGBT books to your children as part of the summer reading program? Did you know some of these transvestites have criminal records for pedophilia? Did you know that this same library association requires your library to celebrate LGBT month with rainbows in the library and promotion of deviant sexual lifestyle and LGBT books? Did you know that the teachers’ union, the National Education Association adopted a “gender inclusive schools” resolution in 2018, notified all their affiliates on February 2019, and brought to the NEA Representative Assembly in Houston, Texas, July 4-7, 2019, plans to instruct public school teachers how to teach transgenderism to children as young as 3 years old? Or that the Human Rights Campaign Foundation recommends “Marlon Bundo” bunny lesson plans to teach homosexuality to elementary school students?* Or that parents are being coerced to give sex hormones of the opposite sex to gender-confused children as young as 8 years old — which will sterize them for life, and mastectomies to healthy girls as young as 13 years old, told if they don’t, these children will be likely to commit suicide, when actually the opposite is true? Do you wonder why parents are not informed if their children attend “clubs” at Priest River High School that teach homosexuality? I wrote our school district superintendent with my concerns about the above-referenced transgender agenda being introduced in our schools, and he did not even send an reply, even though I specifically asked for a response. Does any of this concern you? If so, you need to contact your library and your school district and say so.

As an Idaho driver license examiner, I feel it is only fair to alert Bonner County drivers, and those becoming licensed drivers, of new tougher testing coming in the near future. After the new test becomes effective, turning into the wrong lane (the first lane going the direction you are turning) will be an immediate failure. Making any error four times during the test, for example, not stopping behind a crosswalk line, cutting corners or making wide turns and such will be a disqualification.

Why are politicians trying to take health care?

Nearly two-thirds of Idahoans voted to implement a clean Medicaid expansion program in our state. The reasons are easy to understand: We will bring $400 million in federal dollars back to Idaho, we will provide health care for tens of thousands of our friends, family and neighbors, we will create thousands of good-paying jobs, and we will shore up our rural hospitals. All told, the vote of 61-percent of Idahoans makes sense.
