Muffins: Tasty, versatile 'bread' adapts to any meal

Quick-breads have always been the life-savers of cooks in a hurry, and muffins probably “take the cake” for the QB championship. Great for breakfast, lunch, brunch, supper or even dessert – there’s just no beating their ease of preparation: no kneading, no rising, no long wait for baking -usually about 20 minutes. Close to instant gratification!

Fellow voters, when we were growing up, other people supported our education by voting “yes” on school levies. For over seven decades I’ve watched state legislatures (first in Washington, now in Idaho) fail to adequately fund school districts, which are then forced to turn to supplemental levies. And each time the cost goes up a little, which isn’t surprising since the cost of most things keeps increasing (think groceries, gas, books, etc.) This is a replacement two-year levy. For a home assessed at $250,000, the monthly increase will be slightly less than $7.

Here we are again, another proposed school levy and another letter writing campaign by anti-school district voters. I will probably be wrong in a few cases, but I’d be willing to make some bets about their backgrounds: I would bet good money that most, if not all of them were educated in a public school system somewhere with someone else paying the bills. Other good bets would be that few, if any, of them have children or grandchildren in our school system or have ever worked as an educator. It is sad that they choose to ignore the long-term benefits that quality education brings to all of us in favor of short-term savings for their personal pocket books.

The real facts regarding the LPOSD school levy

The Lake Pend Oreille School District local levy is scheduled for a vote on March 12, 2019. Proponents say passage of the levy is critical to providing essential educational services and opportunities for students. Critics of the levy portray it as unnecessary and simply a “money grab” by greedy teachers and administrators for a school district already awash with too much money to spend. Let’s look at the facts of the matter.

EMS fussing (Daily Bee Jan. 20, 2019). The article regarding who will take over the control of the current EMS department is bereft of any reason to make a change. People have stated they want to gain control of an excellent EMS, but have not stated what they will improve and change it. Is this the usual political attempt (l do have a better noun which the editor would delete) to gain power and screw up our current excellent EMS? Why are our newly installed Bonner County commisioners so bloody anxious to let North Valley in the driver’s seat? And what kind of entity is this” better” than our current EMS? Is Jeff Lindsey a good buddy of the commissioner(s)?

Fearmongering is a staple of school districts nationwide; the LPOSD is no different. In their glossy, full-color flyer, they lay out the doomsday scenario should taxpayers reject their demands for their newest levy, a 49-percent increase over its predecessor — likely to be followed by a second multimillion-dollar levy later — which doesn’t bother informing property owners where our money will be spent. It also avoids mentioning state funding increases they’ll receive.

Michael Wallace Ashby

With great sadness, the family of Michael Wallace Ashby announces his unexpected passing on January 7, 2019, from an apparent heart attack. Michael was born in Seattle, Washington on January 29, 1951, and grew up with his four siblings and parents on their farm on Vashon Island, in the Puget Sound area. His working career, and that of his wife Mary, was spent in Seattle. After retirement, Mike and Mary toured the country in their RV for two years before deciding to make their residence near Sandpoint, Idaho. Michael said the area was reminiscent of Vashon Island, and was further drawn to the area since his father, Wallace, had been raised in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. His beloved wife passed away after a long battle with ALS, and Michael subsequently moved closer to Sand-point with his dog, Lucy, purchasing a residence in Dover. Michael was active in Rotary Club and an enthusiastic yoga practitioner.

Janice Gore’s recent letters to the editor provide a window into what many of us felt when we heard that Lake Pend Oreille School District is going for yet another outrageously high supplemental levy. This time it’s $25.4 million, 49 percent higher than the one in 2017. And as usual, 84 percent goes to salaries, many of which are way beyond the median income of our city and county. Kudos to Mrs. Gore for taking the time to call the school board chair, Cary Kelly, to let him know how she feels about this; more people should do that. But adding insult to injury, he actually hung up on her.

Women Honoring Women accepting nominations

If you have lived in Sandpoint for any length of time, you know that the opportunities to give back to the community are abundant. With literally a few hundred nonprofit agencies in the area, there is a volunteer need that fits virtually every person’s talent. While it is difficult for many to find time to volunteer, for those who do so they typically have no expectation to receive anything in return. But former Sandpoint Mayor and long-time volunteer Marsha Ogilvie decided to put an end to that 20 years ago when she formed Women Honoring Women. The organization recognizes and celebrates Women of Wisdom who have done much through volunteerism and leadership to improve the quality of life for others in Bonner County.

Toby McLaughlin, Successor Trustee STATE OF IDAHO COUNTY OF BONNER This record was acknowledged before me on December 11, 2018, by Toby McLaughlin as Successor Trustee of the Deed of Trust mentioned in this Notice of Trustee's Sale. Brenda Burnett NOTICE REQUIRED BY IDAHO LAW Mortgage foreclosure is a legal proceeding where a lender terminates a borrower's interest in property to satisfy unpaid debt secured by the property. This can mean that when a homeowner gets behind on his or her mortgage payments, the lender forces a sale of the home on which the mortgage loan is based. Some individuals or businesses may say they can "save" your home from foreclosure. You should be cautious about such claims. It is important that you understand all the terms of a plan to "rescue" you from mortgage foreclosure and how it will affect you. It may result in your losing valuable equity that you may have in your home. If possible, you should consult with an attorney or financial professional to find out what other options you may have. Do not delay seeking advice, because the longer you wait, the fewer options you may have. Under Idaho law, you have five (5) days to rescind or undo certain contracts or agreements that relate to transferring interests in property or money in a foreclosure situation. An attorney or financial professional can tell you more about this option. SNP LEGAL 6456 AD# 261546 JANUARY 18, 25, FEBRUARY 1, 8, 2019

What are your priorities saying about you?

According to the Idaho State Department of Education, homelessness nearly doubled for Idaho children in well under 10 years. 4,758 children were living in Idaho without consistent housing in 2010-2011. This increased to 7,820 homeless children in 2017-2018. The shortage of affordable rental housing and an increase in Idaho poverty are listed as the two main reasons for homeless children in Idaho. I would think Idaho legislators would be concerned more about these already born children rather than attempting to break with the federal law Roe v. Wade.

'Truth' is often simply our own perspective

As I stood on my porch recently and beheld the view of Roundtop, I began to think about “truth.” Few if any of us in this community would dispute the truth of the assertion that the Idaho Panhandle is absolutely beautiful. It is a belief that we all share. Each of us can find many more beliefs that we share in common if we try a little. But when it comes to values and politics of the day, we are a pluralistic society. That is to say that we do not always agree on how to define the good life, on what we value and how we believe society should be structured, on how resources that can never satisfy all of our desires should be created and distributed, and indeed on what truth itself is. It has always been so and it always will be. The truth that pluralism is inherent in all societies is the challenge for democracy everywhere and right here at home in our community.
