Landmark same-sex marriage bill wins Senate passage
The Senate has passed landmark bipartisan legislation to protect same-sex marriages. It's an extraordinary sign of shifting national politics on the issue and a measure of relief for the hundreds of thousands of same-sex couples who have married since the Supreme Court's 2015 decision that legalized gay marriage nationwide. The bill approved Tuesday would ensure that same-sex and interracial marriages are enshrined in federal law. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the legislation is "a long time coming" and part of America's "difficult but inexorable march towards greater equality." Senate Democrats are moving quickly to send the bill to the House and President Joe Biden's desk.
CDC: A record 40M kids miss measles vaccine dose
The World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say measles immunization has dropped significantly since the coronavirus pandemic began, resulting in a record high of nearly 40 million children missing a vaccine dose last year. In a report issued Wednesday, WHO and the CDC said there were about 9 million measles infections and 128,000 deaths worldwide last year. WHO and CDC said continued drops in vaccination, weak disease surveillance and delayed response plans due to COVID-19, in addition to ongoing outbreaks in more than 20 countries, mean that "measles is an imminent threat in every region of the world."

Police: Stabbings, Idaho killings unrelated
Almost two weeks after four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their rooms, Moscow police and federal agents continue to follow leads, but on Friday they ruled out any connection to two other stabbings in the Pacific Northwest. Police say they've received inquiries about a 1999 double stabbing in Pullman, Washington. They've also were asked about the 2021 double stabbing in Salem, Oregon. Police say the cases share similarities with the Idaho homicides, but they don't appear related. The four students were found dead Nov. 13 in a rental house near campus. Idaho AG-elect hires former Trump administration attorneys
Idaho will add a new position of solicitor general to challenge federal government actions and policies when Republican Raul Labrador becomes the state's new attorney general in early January. Labrador on Thursday announced two staff positions to be filled by former members of President Donald Trump's administration. David Dewhirst will be Labrador's chief deputy, and Theo Wold will be the solicitor general. Both will also be part of Labrador's transition advisory committee. Dewhirst most recently was the solicitor general for Montana. Only about a dozen states have solicitor generals. Wold served as deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy under Trump.

Pumpkins can be composted, donated to farms, fed to wildlife
Fall's pumpkins don't have to end up in the landfill. Before throwing that jack-o'-lantern into the trash, consider ways to make them even more useful. Adding pumpkins to a compost pile can be beneficial to next year's garden. First, any remaining seeds have to be removed, and decorative material such as glitter, paint, stickers and candle wax must be cut off. Pumpkins also can be donated to community gardens' compost piles. Farms, animal sanctuaries and even zoos also accept pumpkins to feed their animals. Backyard wildlife enjoy pumpkins as well. Leftover pumpkin seeds also are a tasty treat for a host of birds.

Coroner: UI students were stabbed to death in their beds
Four University of Idaho students who were found dead in a rental house last Sunday were stabbed to death in their beds and likely were asleep when the attacks occurred. That's according to Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt. She also told NewsNation that each victim suffered multiple stab wounds from a "pretty large knife." Efforts to reach Mabbutt by telephone on Friday were diverted to an Idaho State Police spokesman, who did not immediately return messages. Mabbutt's comments expanded on the autopsy reports released on Thursday, which concluded the four students were murdered by being stabbed to death. The killings have shaken Moscow, an Idaho Panhandle town of 25,000 residents that last saw a homicide about five years ago.

Walmart offers to pay $3.1 billion to settle opioid lawsuits
Walmart has agreed to pay $3.1 billion to settle lawsuits nationwide over the impact of the prescriptions its pharmacies filled for powerful prescription opioid painkillers. The deal would still need to be approved by 43 states to take effect. It also includes $78 million for Native American tribes. Pharmacy chains CVS Health and Walgreen Co. each said they would pay about $5 billion over time to settle their suits. All told, the opioid crisis has been linked more more than 500,000 U.S. deaths over the past two decades. Other major drugmakers and distributors have already finalized settlements in some cases.

'The Night the Stars Fell'
I can't say I'm even an amateur astronomer — but some years back I began calling myself a “sky miner.”The heavens are fascinating to me. Cloud formations. Stars. Moon. Last week I was up and down in the night following the total lunar eclipse, and a chance to see the blood moon at 2a. I remember the time a Minnesota neighbor and I stood in the yard during a partial eclipse, jokingly waving at ourselves when we saw Earth's shadow appear on the moon.

Hunting has no set expiration date — if you can shoulder a firearm, still see good enough to look down the sights and traverse a fair amount of open country, then your clock’s still ticking. Pine Street Hill: Memories and magic
KLT working to preserve historic propoerty
For more than half a century, the steep hill on West Pine Street has attracted winter sports enthusiasts with a penchant for adrenaline. Known by locals as the Pine Street Hill in the 1940s, it was the destination for Sandpoint area skiers before Schweitzer Mountain Resort opened in 1963. A casual operation set on privately-owned land, skiers volunteered their time to install and maintain the towrope operated by a portable ski lift motor. Calling themselves the Sandpoint Ski Club, they earned money to buy the motor and pay for gas to run it by raising and selling pigs, procuring donations from local businesses, and asking their parents for money.

A fresh appreciation for Veterans Day
When you think of Veterans Day is it a collective group that bears the name “veteran”.… but has no root in real life. Back then … over there … doesn't pertain to me stuff. Last Saturday, over a delicious breakfast provided by the American Legion at the Priest River VFW, I talked with some of the vets who were there.
Honor veterans by doing your democracy homework
Every year on November 11, Americans gather at Veterans Day observations to honor and thank America’s veterans for their service to the country. It is certainly right and proper that they do so, but is that the extent of what our countrymen must do to show appreciation for those who put their lives at risk to serve the nation? As one of those veterans, I submit it is the very least of what they are obliged to do.

We have certainly seen lots of scary campaign ads with ominous music and frightening visuals showing border crossers carrying packages of fentanyl and other drugs to sell to our children. But the libertarian Cato Institute says that “fentanyl is overwhelmingly smuggled by U.S. citizens.” Statistics assembled by Cato show that about 90% of fentanyl seizures occur at regular border crossings, being transported in the vehicles of U.S. citizens.

Johnson will do what's right for N. Idaho
Like so many of us, we drove across the Long Bridge and knew we’d found our forever home. Our family moved here without any ties to the community; no friends, family, or jobs. We quickly made friends, grew businesses, and built our family.
Johnson is the best choice to represent us
I am writing to encourage the voters in the Idaho's First legislative District to write-in vote for Steve Johnson for Senator to represent the people in the First District in the upcoming election.

Hearing scheduled for revised Camp Bay proposal
A hearing has been scheduled to determine how a proposed footpath to allow access to Camp Bay could impact the public interest in a proposed vacation of Camp Bay Road. M3’s latest proposal would reroute non-resident foot traffic to the southeast of the current beach. M3, who is developing Camp Bay, first petitioned the county in 2021 to vacate the last half mile of the road for a private subdivision. County commissioners initially approved the application, agreeing with the company’s claim it would benefit the public.

Herndon will fight for conservative values
Most of us here in North Idaho live and work in a rural environment. That means we do a lot of driving and a doubling of gas prices really hurts our budgets. It seems like the liberal politicians in Washington, D.C., and Boise couldn’t care less about that when they pass legislation that spends billions and trillions of borrowed money (federal handouts) and refuse to mind the conservative fiscal principles that made our country strong in the first place.

Blood test to screen for multiple cancers promises to boost early detection
Detecting cancer early before it spreads throughout the body can be lifesaving. This is why doctors recommend regular screening for several common cancer types, using a variety of methods. Colonoscopies, for example, screen for colon cancer, while mammograms screen for breast cancer. While important, getting all these tests done can be logistically challenging, expensive and sometimes uncomfortable for patients. But what if a single blood test could screen for most common cancer types all at once? This is the promise of multicancer early detection tests, or MCEDs. This year, President Joe Biden identified developing MCED tests as a priority for the Cancer Moonshot, a US$1.8 billion federal effort to reduce the cancer death rate and improve the quality of life of cancer survivors and those living with cancer.

Let’s talk about unusual diabetes symptoms
Diabetes is a group of health conditions that impairs how your body processes sugar for energy. They include Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. If left untreated, diabetes can result in a multitude of complications, so it’s crucial that we all know the warning signs. The symptoms we hear about most often are sometimes called the three polys of diabetes. They are polyuria which is frequent urination; polydipsia which is increased thirst, and polyphagia which is an increased appetite due to loss of glucose and fluids because of increased urination.

Want real representation on real issues? Vote for Johnson
Driving through Sagle and across Long Bridge I am reminded daily of another reason to write in Steve Johnson for Idaho Senate. The road work on the south end of Long Bridge making the road safer for all and finally giving safe access to the highway from Lake Shore Drive is going on because of our present senator, Jim Woodruff.
Johnson is the right pick for state senate seat
If you appreciate the guy who stalked junior high students with graphic posters in an attempt to scare them, menaced our community Farmer's Market with his bullhorn, and you’re happy with your tax dollars being used to defend a political stunt against the Festival then go ahead and vote for Scott Herndon. He’s also the guy who made false claims against Republican incumbent Jim Woodard, completely perverting Woodward’s voting record, while claiming he’s a Christian.
Herndon hasn't earned Idaho Senate seat
When you vote, please write in Steve Johnson for State Senate. He is a long-time resident of Bonner County who spent much of his working life as a teacher and principal in Bonner County schools. He is an honorable man.

State of Deer and Elk: Counting herds, and how hunters help through mandatory hunter reports
Biologists use a variety of methods to know the health of the herds, and hunters play an important role
Deer and elk live throughout Idaho in habitats ranging from desert to mixed conifer forests, and a big part of a wildlife manager’s job is to estimate how many are out there. What role do hunters play in that? More than you might realize. If each deer and elk hunter spends a few moments filling out a mandatory hunter report, they make a valuable contribution to wildlife management that can lead to more hunting opportunity, but more on that later.
