A Sandpoint woman wanted on charges second-degree kidnapping is back in the country after a team of deputy U.S. Marshals arrived at the Spokane International Airport late Thursday with her in custody. Laurel E. Hannah, 40, who did not have custody of her 1-year-old child, allegedly took the youth and fled to Costa Rica in late summer. An arrest warrant was issued in mid-August for Hannah on a charge of custodial interference and she was later charged with second-degree kidnapping by the Bonner County Prosecutor’s Office.

New obesity medications change how users think of holiday meals
Holiday meals may be changing for millions of Americans struggling with obesity and taking a new generation of weight-loss drugs. Experts and consumers say the drugs are shifting dining habits and social norms around food-centric holidays like Thanksgiving, Passover and Christmas. Some users welcome greater control over what they eat during the holidays. Others may lose their appetites entirely, doctors say, risking what one researcher called "the reward of having a beautiful meal."

Walleye aren't bad fish, just wrong for Idaho
Fish and Game provides them in three reservoirs, but they keep showing up elsewhere
Idaho and walleye just aren’t a good match in most places, and here’s why. Walleye are native to large Midwestern lakes that tend to have large and prolific forage bases of minnows, shiners, chubs and other small baitfish. Those baitfish are not available in most Idaho waters, so walleye are likely to eat other game fish that are highly valued by Idaho anglers. Eventually, those other fish species could be gone, or greatly diminished, and the end result could be a bunch of unhealthy, unsustainable walleye populations.

System in murder cases needs improvement
In Europe, according to my son who resides in France, if someone is arrested for murder like “Bryan Kohberger” who allegedly stabbed and murdered those four college students in Moscow, Idaho, over a year ago, he would have two weeks to prepare his defense. Then if found guilty, like Kohberger who definitely is, he would have two weeks after being convicted to file another defense case. If after that defense case and he was still found guilty it’s up to the judge to sentence him in his case put to death.

Create your own English garden in North Idaho
Today, we take a page from the gardening books of two great ladies of English horticulture fame. Gertrude Jekyll and Rosemary Verey inspired today’s suggestions, since plans created by each of them jibe so beautifully with possibilities for our own location and climate. They’ve chosen the colors and arrangement and I’ve simply substituted more suitable selections for an equally stunning outcome. Everything on my list will be hardy in Zones 3-5, and if there’s a choice between a Zone 4 and 5, I’ll always pick the “4."
Non-existent records, false claims and other problems
My most recent public records record request denial was issued by Bauer on Nov. 17. When a county commissioner can’t get public records related to county government, that’s a problem. When an elected official, or their deputies, allege fraud and then block attempts to view records, that’s a big problem. When the county fair board alleges fraud and the misappropriation of funds while not maintaining the financial records required by law, that’s a bigger problem. When elected officials receive privileges and services that the rest of the taxpayers do not at taxpayer expense, it’s just wrong.

Hand-carved temple finds home on Hawaii's Kauai
The island of Kauai is home to the only all-stone, hand-carved Hindu temple in the West, built without power tools or electricity. The Iraivan Temple is modeled after millennia-old temples in South India. It was born from a guru's vision and the labor of monks who practice Shaivism, a major tradition within Hinduism that worships Shiva as the supreme being. The 33-year project involved artisans in southern India carving individual pieces and shipping them 8,000 miles to Kauai. The land is surrounded by lush gardens, forests and a river that some Native Hawaiians consider sacred. The campus attracts tourists as well as pilgrims from around the globe.

Facts important to understanding history
On November 19, Mr. Golding wrote about his frustration with the war in Israel. So far, so good. But then he suggested a bombing be done similar to what was done to end World War II in August 1945. Sandpoint residents were decisive in choosing a new mayor and two new representatives to City Council. Britain's medicines regulator has authorized the world's first gene therapy treatment for sickle cell disease, in a move that could offer relief to thousands of people with the crippling illness in the U.K. In a statement on Thursday, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said it had approved Casgevy, the first medicine licensed using the gene editing tool CRISPR, which won its makers a Nobel prize in 2020. The medicine was approved for patients with sickle cell and thalassemia. Both diseases are caused by mistakes in the genes that carry hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen.
CDC: Flu cases rising in U.S.
U.S. health officials say at least seven states are seeing high levels of the flu and that cases are rising in other parts of the country. New flu data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows flu is steadily rising. The winter flu season traditionally ramps up in December or January. But it took off in October last year and is making a November entrance now. Louisiana has very high flu activity. There is high activity in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico and South Carolina and the District of Columbia. Fast-forward to this year: After playing a set before Pope Francis' Mass at World Youth Day, Peixoto has cemented his global following as "the DJ priest." For Peixoto, performing at music festivals in his clerical collar and large black headphones is a way to bring a message of faith to youth who might have never heard of Jesus – and to do so in a language they can understand. Says the priest: "The world is not so closed to Jesus. But you need to speak the language."

The proportion of U.S. kindergartners exempted from school attendance vaccination requirements has hit its highest level ever. Hawaii saw the largest jump, with the statistic nearly doubling from the year before. Idaho was highest overall, with 12%. Experts say more parents are questioning routine childhood vaccinations that they used to automatically accept. It's an effect of the political schism that emerged during the pandemic around COVID-19 vaccines. It also raises the chances of outbreaks of measles, polio and other diseases.

An Israeli-Palestinian war will increase domestic acceptance and financial support for all wars.

Mexicans honor deceased relatives on the Day of the Dead
Mexicans in the state of Oaxaca are celebrating the Day of the Dead. It's a time to honor deceased relatives with vigils and homemade altars. Nov. 1 is meant to commemorate loved ones by cleaning their graves, decorating with fresh flowers and gathering around all night long. The local secretary of culture says October and November are the dry season, when the land languishes. But it is also being reborn, "so there is this thought that the dead return to enjoy what they loved in life." The traditions are embraced from childhood and passed from parents to children.

Treasury bond drama and investment strategies
Conventional investment practice advises holding bonds as a solid, safe, and secure part of a portfolio. The returns are not spectacular, as is possible in the stock market, but rather a steady stream of income based on the coupon or interest rate of the bond. A bond with a par value of $1,000 paying 4% generates a return of $40 annually over the life of the bond, plus the return of the $1,000 principal.

When age-related macular degeneration becomes geographic atrophy
I learn so much from commercials. The other day I watched Henry Winkler talk about GA. He said, “GA is irreversible, it’s important to catch it early.” I wasted no time Googling “GA” to find out what it is. Geographic atrophy, I found out, isn’t when my brain can’t find Bolivia on a map.
New cure for sickle cell disease may be coming
There soon may be a new cure for sickle cell disease that attacks the disorder at its genetic source. On Tuesday, advisers to the Food and Drug Administration will review a gene therapy for the inherited blood disorder, which mostly affects Black people in the U.S. If approved by the FDA, it would be the first therapy on the U.S. market based on CRISPR, a gene editing tool that won its inventors the Nobel Prize. Doing what you can, where you are
How do I manage when the world news is filled with things about which I can do nothing — or very little. Overwhelming grief and suffering and hate on the big screen. The obvious answer asks a question: “What can I do something about?” Does that seem like a dot in this vast universe? Maybe it is — but it's my dot; the dot that is my life — and if I look closely I see it is actually many dots. My work is to connect them.
