Monte Heil (Daily Bee, Nov. 7, 2019) contends that a scientific consensus about climate change “is not proof that an argument is sound.” In fact, more than 95% of the thousands of practicing climate scientists and every reputable scientific organization worldwide concur that human-caused climate change is a reality. The consensus is based on an abundance of confirmatory evidence. (See “Climate change: evidence and causes | Royal Society”) Experience has shown that, in the modern practice of science, such an overwhelming agreement among experts consistently provides the most reliable and time-tested explanations. If not the scientific consensus, who/what does Mr. Heil rely on to provide him with a “sound” argument about climate change? Mouthpieces bankrolled by the fossil-fuel industry?

The community-driven planning process has been underway since April and the final draft Master Plan will be presented for council adoption in January 2020. Traditionally, the city’s strategy for growth of parks infrastructure has been reactionary and opportunistic. As a result, we have been unable to form or implement an all-inclusive vision that maximizes public benefit. By establishing a cohesive vision for our parks, the city can serve more users, make better use of our limited parks resources and leverage grants and funding sources that are not available without a good plan.

Priest River store deserves kudos
No complaints today. I have a kudos instead. It goes to Pattie’s Action Auto Parts in Priest River. They have made my work and automotive hobby easier. Several times now Pattie has allowed me to ship truck freight items to her store. I can’t get a big truck to my place. From large and heavy sheetmetal restoration tools, to John Deere engine blocks. All by requested permission every time. After arrival, I get a call and go pick it up. Seamless and trouble free. This is so far beyond the normal process of buying my needed auto parts and consumables. Patties goes out of their way to help and it makes a difference. I have dealt with many auto parts houses in the last 35 years. A few good ones and plenty of not so good ones. It is one of the first items I check when moving to a new place. Where is the closest quality parts store. Patties Action Auto is the best. Worth the trip. And I mean that. I get greeted by name and I have never had an issue with a part. Pattie also has a steel trap of a memory with part numbers. She can rattle off a part number off the top of her head. I have not seen her be wrong yet. It is amazing to see. So Pattie, Larry, Josh, Fawn, Neil, and Joe, thank you. This is long overdue. For making my work easier and helping me obtain the tools that enable me to do a better job. And keeping my Jeeps running of course. I truly appreciate it.

Celebrating 'we win' certainty
Here in the northeastern-most enclave of “Seahawk Nation,” I take a risk in revealing that I grew up in Montana as an avid 49er fan. Especially when they drafted Joe Montana out of college, I knew that was a marriage made in heaven. Sure enough, the ’80s were the glory years, led by “Joe Cool.” I hate to also confess that I used to almost literally “live and die” with each 49er win or loss, and almost passed on God’s call to overseas mission’s work, because I would not be able to follow my beloved Niners. Fortunately, I was able to overcome that nonsense, and made the right choice. I’m still not proud that I once had such misplaced priorities, but I can still relate when I see others experiencing the same intense level of team “ownership” I once had.

Why is gasoline in Sandpoint area more expensive?
I love living in Sandpoint, however, I would love it more if gasoline in Sandpoint was the same price as gasoline in Coeur d’Alene or even Bonners Ferry. I would also love Sandpoint more if Sandpoint had a decent car wash where you can vacuum your car for free and that actually thoroughly washes the car and then dries it completely as the car washes do in Coeur d’Alene.

Rainbow crosswalks would brighten up the city
On a recent stroll downtown to check out the wrath of destruction along First Avenue, I noticed some new emblems applied to our city sidewalks directing folks to walk their bicycles. They were painted in white, and I thought they would be much more visible if painted in bright colors. Then shazam! It hit me: why don’t we have colorful crosswalks like those in Victoria and Vancouver? I think our neighbors to the north are onto something, because walking across them brought a bounce to the step and a smile to this old man’s face.

Miller's Country Store: 'Made with love'
Pulling into the parking lot at Miller’s Country Store I watch as the front door swings open. An elderly lady gently places her feet down with each step as she walks across the wet pavement carrying a platter of caramel rolls. Accompanying her with the rest of her supplies, Lane Riffey, the store owner, walks patiently beside her, listening intently as she spills all of last week’s events to him.

Veteran’s Day brings images of freedom — and thoughts of the people who in some way have made our freedom possible — in the United States and in support of freedom around the world. I can’t fully appreciate what servicemen and women have done — and continue to do — on my behalf. To really know you’d have to be physically where they are, with their families when they are away or return permanently changed, in the hospitals where they battle to recover from injuries, or in the cemeteries where they lie. You’d have to even see inside their memories.

We need to rehire all Festival at Sandpoint staff
I was very happy to read Sam Calhoun’s, executive director of Arts Northwest, column in the paper recently. As the founding member of the Festival, 1980, I appreciate what Dyno did for the Festival. I was more interested in classical music and a summer music camp. However, that didn’t work out, the Festival was losing money, and new directors came and went. Then in 1998 Dyno was hired. I was interested in starting a music appreciation workshop. I went to Dyno, she listened and the 5th Grade Outreach program was initiated. Dyno has been most supportive with this program and other classical music endeavors. These endeavors include student musician scholarships, instrument lending program, family concert petting zoo, and free tickets for the fifth graders and parents for the symphony concert the 5th Grade Outreach program is based on.

Sandpoint has lost a legend
Sandpoint has lost a legend. Many are unaware of the esteemed and influential Leata Judd, to their misfortune. She graced our community with humility, nobility and dignity. Lake Pend Oreille High School is particularly saddened by her passing. She shared her artistic talent with the art class students each and every day and contributed her clay pieces to the fund-raising endeavors of the school. Leata walked daily to the school, weather permitting, and up the staircase to participate in the art class. She befriended all and spoke kindly positively and benevolently of all. Leata contributed more than her artistic talent. She left a legacy of love, laughter and selflessness that no one can rival or up to which no one can measure. Leata’s absence leaves a hole in our hearts. We are grateful and enriched by your coming into our lives, Leata. We will miss you. Condolences to the family.
