Judge: USFS can drop fire retardant
Finds practice pollutes streams in western U.S.
A judge has ruled that the U.S. Forest Service can keep using chemical retardant dropped from aircraft to fight wildfires, despite finding that the practice pollutes streams in western states in violation of federal law. The ruling Friday from U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen in Montana came after environmentalists sued the government for dropping the red slurry material into waterways hundreds of times over the past decade. Government officials say chemical fire retardant is sometimes crucial to slowing the advance of dangerous blazes. Wildfires across North America have grown bigger and more destructive over the past two decades.

Supreme Court sharply limits fed's power over wetlands
The Supreme Court has sharply limited the federal government's authority to police water pollution into certain wetlands. It's the second decision in as many years in which a conservative majority narrowed the reach of environmental regulations. The outcome could threaten efforts to control flooding on the Mississippi River and protect the Chesapeake Bay, among many projects, according to Justice Brett Kavanaugh. He broke with the other five conservatives on the court. The justices boosted property rights over concerns about clean water in a ruling in favor of an Idaho couple who sought to build a house near a lake.

Boosts property rights over clean water
The Supreme Court has made it harder for the federal government to police water pollution. FDA backs RSV vaccine for pregnant women
Federal health advisers are backing a first-of-its-kind RSV vaccine to protect newborns by immunizing their moms late in pregnancy. The virus fills hospitals with wheezing babies each winter. Pfizer’s research shows a late-pregnancy shot is 82% effective at preventing severe RSV in the infants’ first months of life. The Food and Drug Administration asked if there's a hint that the vaccine might affect premature birth but its advisers weren't convinced. The FDA recently approved a different RSV vaccine for older adults, the world’s first made by rival GSK. FDA will consider Thursday's recommendation in deciding the fate of Pfizer’s maternal vaccine.

Sauter's record firmly in line with Democrats
In the debate about Representative Sauter’s failure to accurately represent the Republicans of North Idaho, we seem to have forgotten that he was unable to garner support from even 40% of LD1 Republican voters in last year’s May primary. The only reason he was able to win the seat is that he drew substantial support from Democrats who had been urged to register as Republicans for the primary by front groups like North Idaho Voter Services (please see their March 10, 2022, email suggesting just that) and there were four other primary candidates splitting the vote.

Prosecutors have 60 days to announce whether they will seek the death penalty. Appeals court upholds Lott sentence
A bid for post-conviction relief by a former Bonner County man serving a 25-year prison term for killing his wife and trying to pass her death off as a suicide has been rejected by the Idaho Court of Appeals. Stephen Matthew Lott, 54, had appealed a district court dismissal of his petition, claiming prosecutorial misconduct and his trial counsel was ineffective in a variety of ways. However, in an unpublished ruling written by Judge David W. Gratton, the Idaho Court of Appeals ruled the district court did not err in dismissing the petition for post-conviction relief. Also hearing the case were Judge Molly J. Huskey and Judge Amanda K. Brailsford.

Bryan Kohberger was arrested late last year and charged with burglary and four counts of first-degree murder in connection with the Nov. 13, 2022, slayings of four students at a rental home near the University of Idaho campus. At the time, Kohberger was a graduate student studying criminology at nearby Washington State University. Study: skin patch to treat peanut allergies shows promise
A new study finds an experimental skin patch shows promise to treat toddlers who are highly allergic to peanuts. There is no cure for this common allergy. The only treatment is for children 4 and older who can consume a special powder to train their bodies to tolerate an accidental bite. The patch named Viaskin aims for similar treatment absorbed through the skin. Researchers reported that toddlers who wore a daily patch for a year could safely eat a few peanuts. The findings were published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. More research is underway before regulators could consider the patch.

U.S. health panel: Start mammograms at 40, not 50
A federal task force is recommending that women start getting every-other-year mammograms at age 40 instead of waiting until 50. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has long said women can choose to start breast cancer screening as young as 40 but until now has made a stronger recommendation for the X-ray exams every two years between ages 50 and 74. Tuesday's draft recommendation, if finalized, won't settle the issue. Other health groups have differing guidelines for when women should start routine screening and whether they need it annually or every other year.

Through more than 200 years of service, the Sisters of Charity of New York have nursed Civil War casualties, joined civil rights and anti-war demonstrations, cared for orphans, and taught countless children. But the Catholic nuns recently decided that their aging order will no longer accept new members in the United States and will accept the "path of completion." They say the decision to set the stage for their congregation's demise was not an easy one. Its numbers have declined from a 1960s peak of more than 1,300 to 154 today. No new sisters had joined in the U.S. in more than 20 years.

Shea dedicated to both library, community
I am writing to endorse Susan Shea for the East Bonner County Library Board of Trustees.
Vote for Shea and keep our library stellar
Our library is wonderful exactly as is. It has been wonderful for the 30-plus years I've been a patron. Nothing much has changed except our rapidly expanding community.

Financial confusion in School District 83
There are some things that everyone in School District 83 needs to know before voting on the levy later this month:
Cellphones, youth, and today's world
In the store, I have mentioned to numerous customers that we have been trying to get a high school boy to work at the store, but haven’t had any luck.
Military not about protecting democracy
I am a veteran and have owned and used guns for sport for over 60 years. In this past session, the Idaho Legislature considered repealing all or part of the state’s law banning private militias. I think that would be opening the door for evil people to take up arms and take the law into their own hands. What we saw in D.C. on Jan 6, 2021, was just a glimpse of what a world with militias could be like.

Freedom of expression critical to functioning society
The First Amendment to the Constitution recognizes that freedom of expression and thought is critical to a functioning society. Having a small group of people locking books away from adults as well as children is contrary to our constitution. That is why I am urging you to vote for incumbent Susan Shea for the Library Board on May 16.

Students are more than levy money, test scores
It's sad to read letters suggesting that West Bonner School District’s levy should not pass. There is so much misinformation.
Where is all of district's money going?
As a parent, I recognize that education is one of the most important things we can provide our children. I also recognize that teachers are the primary means of providing that education, and are one of our most important community resources. Because I value these, I have to ask what we are doing wrong in our West Bonner County School District.
Levy's failure will cause lasting harm
Don’t be short-sighted. Voting no on the levy will have lasting negative effects. Underfunded schools often have larger class sizes, fewer advanced classes, and a lack of resources. They also tend to have less experienced teaching staff or no teachers at all.
WHO says COVID-19 is no longer emergency
The World Health Organization says that COVID-19 no longer qualifies as a global emergency. The announcement on Friday marks a symbolic end to the devastating coronavirus pandemic that triggered once-unthinkable lockdowns, upended economies and killed millions of people worldwide. WHO said that the pandemic hasn't come to an end despite the emergency phase being over. The U.N. health agency noted recent spikes in cases in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. WHO says that thousands of people are still dying from the virus every week.
Is hearing loss affecting your health or vice versa?

Vote Shea for constructive, non-partisan library
I was struck by a sense of foreboding and mourning during NIC’s jazz bands' last performance as trustee board politicization might lead to college access. A similar trend toward chaos is threatening our library out of an unreasonable fear for our children’s safety. There is no threat of drag show story hours, legally defined obscene or pornographic material, or sexualization by our local librarians and adult fiction is already confined to the upstairs.
Know the history of the words
Must we suffer the angsty rhetoric about “fascism” again? This time some are screeching that term about the East Bonner County Library Board election among other things, and their usage of it is just as factually and historically incorrect as it was in the last election cycle.

Financial expert cautions against unchecked spending
In a letter that was recently made public, an accountant who lives in our district shared some of her findings after digging into the West Bonner County School District financial statements. Everybody in the district should read that letter. It’s alarming.

So I’m going to stand with Keith and Susan and vote “no” on the proposed levy this May. We need a third-party audit of school district spending first.
WBCSD: Levy vital to school security
If the West Bonner County School District’s levy doesn’t pass next Tuesday, school safety will be impacted, district facilities director Ken Eldore said. Among the items earmarked for funding in the two-year, $4.7-million-per-year levy are safety and security facility improvements and the district’s school resource officer. The proposed levy amount is roughly 33% of the district’s annual operating budget and would replace the levy ending June 30.

Shea is the best choice for library board
Readers for Rodriquez. Subtext: read what we want you to read. In every speech, Stacy Rodriquez’s number one issue is the obscenity of drag queens wagging their “things” in front of 3-4-year-old children in American libraries. “Not here!” Has she seen the internet?
Shea focused on what's best for library
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Susan Shea during the (fairly) recent addition to the East Bonner County Library. She was focused on doing the best for the library with no hint of an agenda.
‘Obscenity’ a smokescreen in library election
You know, my curiosity was piqued when I saw a list float to the top of the outrageous debate surrounding our library. A “books to avoid” list from a Kootenai and Shoshone-based group called Cleanbooks4kidz. A list that should include a variety of topics that could potentially count as “obscenity,” right? Let’s look at the numbers. As of May 4, there were 807 titles on that list. Of those, 620 are on that list because of gay, gender identity, or transgender issue-oriented content. That’s 77%. In contrast, There are 19 books involving rape, and one involving violence. That’s 2% and 0%. I’ve been told that this whole effort is not motivated by anti-LGBTQ animosity, so I’m confused.
Susan Shea is the best choice for EBCL
You can’t fix what isn’t broken. This statement sums up my feelings regarding this election. The library is an amazing place; a gathering point for our community and is run very well. The library has not taken a 3% levy while Susan has been on the board, yet continues to expand programs! The library offers yoga, book clubs, story time, coding classes, mental health resources and more! Susan’s leadership has allowed the library to grow in offerings, yet not be a tax burden for the town.
Open your eyes to raging culture war
Ordinary hard-working decent people are now regularly demonized and called extreme by leftist extremists and middle-of-the-road Republicans who want to keep their eyes closed to the cultural war raging against our society by people who kill and call it choice, who hate and call it love, who normalize porn, racism and sexual grooming of kids by dysphoric fetishists who pretend to be what they are not.

Variety of voices needed on library board
Perhaps some local history will inform the East Bonner County Library District Board trustee contest. In 1932, according to an article in the April 29 edition of a local newspaper, the public library asked the “citizens of Sandpoint and vicinity to come to their aid by contributing good books.” The library had been used so much during the previous winter that much of its collection had worn out! To refill the shelves, the board reached out to the community.
Reject extremism, vote for Susan Shea
I am voting for Susan Shea for East Bonner County Library board trustee. Susan is the incumbent candidate and respected member of our highly functioning board. This board has kept our library fiscally sound while at the same time providing our community access to additional programming and expanded library resources.
Keep radical politics out of library board
We need to protect our community from becoming a political battleground for extremists on both sides. Remember when an armed van of Proud Boys came to CdA to “protect us” from the mythical tide of Antifa that was about to overwhelm us?

An explanation of votes taken this session
Below is a brief explanation of the votes questioned by the BCRCC. I consider my votes to represent traditional Republican values of fiscal responsibility, support of business, less regulation, and personal freedom and liberty.
Vote expressed BCRCC's dissatisfaction
When the Bonner County Republican Central Committee recently issued a vote of no confidence in Representative Mark Sauter, the key to our decision was whether members of the BCRCC have confidence that Representative Sauter will support the most significant and key principles of the Idaho Republican Party’s platform.

Bookmobile 'upgrades' and fiscal responsibility

Why do we need those documents?” My answer was something like: “We live in a time when the legal documents make it far easier to settle estates than it used to be.”

Support Susan Shea for library board seat
I love the EBCL because it has been a haven of peace and freedom from the divisive politics that seem to be so pervasive today. Our current library board, and the incumbent Susan Shea, have run a very tight fiscal ship with a focus on meeting the needs of all citizens, regardless of creed or ideology. Their goal has been to support and protect our First Amendment rights. Their efforts have made the EBCL one of the crown jewels of Bonner County.
Teach kids, then ask for more money
The West Bonner County School District levy is not for the kids. WBCSD teachers already make far more than the school districts around them. What are the parents getting? The bottom of the bottom in SAT scores. It costs $14,000 a year to educate a poorly-performing student in West Bonner and $9,000 for a better-performing student in Post Falls.

Sexual abuse stories seem salacious, unnecessary
Recently there have been a series of articles that I feel need to be called out. The many mental health care workers that I’ve spoken with are extremely concerned about the full disclosure of details of sexual abuse forced upon children in our community. There is absolutely no valid reason to report such shocking details in a small local paper. It only needlessly stigmatizes the victims, further traumatizing the children. This kind of sensationalism journalism also discourages other victims from reporting abuse. The research on this goes back decades.

Possible sale of junior high is wrong
Evidently, you are in discussions to sell the Priest River Jr. High School building. There are many in the community that object to selling the school, I agree with them and am strongly opposed to this sale for numerous reasons listed below. Also, a decision of this magnitude should be put before the local citizens for their input and or vote.

Study: Quiet, parents' touch help opioid users' newborns
New research shows that babies born to opioid users have shorter hospital stays when care includes more parent involvement and a quieter environment. These babies can have withdrawal symptoms because of exposure in the womb. The babies treated with the new approach were ready to go home about a week sooner and needed less medication than those who had standard care. Researchers studied the care of 1,300 newborns at 26 U.S. hospitals and reported their findings Sunday. The U.S. government funded the work as part of a program to address the opioid addiction crisis.

Shea is the true conservative choice
Susan Shea is the true conservative choice. The BCRCC and IFF have basically hijacked true conservatism. They espouse far right, Christian nationalism, inspired by the Redoubt concept, which is parallel to the Aryan Nations that were expelled from this area 30 or so years ago.

Vote Rodriguez, vote for the children
Children. We care deeply for them. I can’t think of anything more in this life that we want to protect than our children. Yet we all seem to have different philosophies of accomplishing that goal. I once heard a statement that encompasses the very heart of this battle:
Local veterans raise concerns about VA clinic

Vote for Susan Shea, First Amendment protections
When I was thinking about moving to Sandpoint almost seven years ago, I came to visit a few times and the first place I went to check out was, yes, the library. I was sold! I have always felt that the community library is the real heartbeat, the real "face" of any community. It tells so much about a place. And we are so fortunate to have the amazing library we do, right here in Sandpoint.
Shea represents community, not national groups
I’ve been following the East Bonner County Library Board race fairly closely, because the library is near and dear to my heart (and my family’s). I’ve seen a lot of great reasons to re-elect Susan Shea: her budget management, her analytical approach, and her experience as an incumbent are beyond reproach.
