At this stage of life, it is sometimes sobering to recall the great “Jimmy Durante Show” in which, at the close of the show, he would dim the lights, put on his coat and hat and walk into the night and the retreating glow of street lights. In the distant light he stopped and bid a good night with a tip of his hat and a salute to “Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” This month, we have lost a wonderful man, Jim Klein, whom many of us have known as an outstanding educator, athlete, scientist, skier, swimmer, bicyclist, parent, neighbor, and, erstwhile speaker of Spanish.

Gut bacteria create a complex environment in our digestive system called the microbiota. This is characterized by high population density, wide diversity, and a complexity of interactions. There are at least 1,000 different species of bacteria with more than 3 million genes living in each of us. This is 150 times more than our own genes. We can easily have 4 to 6 pounds of living bacteria in our gut.

Finding our way back to who we really are

While struggling to find a topic for my inaugural column of 2017, providence smiled upon me, and I was able to overhear a contrast in visions, given by two national leaders, about who we are as a nation. What came to mind was how have we strayed so far from our original intent, are we able to find a path back, and what is the purpose, and efficacy, of elected representation. These are not small questions that can be resolved in a short weekly column, if at all. However, given that it is beginning of Idaho’s legislative session, it is a worthy topic to discuss.

It would reduce the opportunities for productive uses, as well. Land set aside reduces the potential revenue base for all county residents and discourages businesses from locating here.

Dear Trump supporters, I would like to cordially invite you to the Woman’s March on Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. in the Panida Theater then to the Statue of Liberty. That doesn’t mean they want a sexist, racist, polluted world where locals are locked out of their favorite hunting and fishing spots. If you believe in the ideals of our Founding Fathers, “That all are created equal with certain inalienable rights …” show your support and joint us.

Support for Scotchman Peaks exaggerated

Even though Sen. James Risch, R-Idaho, introduced a Scotchman Peaks Wilderness bill in December, another bill will have to be reintroduced this year. Now is the time to get your comments or concerns to Sen. Risch and make it known that many local citizens are not part of the supposed “wide-spread” support that we hear about so often, including from our outgoing and out-of-touch commissioners. There are several significant issues that many local residents are concerned about. Sign-ups for the FSPW newsletter, the support of the former commissioners and the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce do not constitute widespread local support. There are many issues of concern about this proposal.

The corruption of Sandpoint’s city council has spread all the way to Boise State University. Rather than have a simple up or down vote on the business improvement district, Jennifer Stapleton devised a scheme to let a couple of 22-year-old graduate students determine the future of the BID. One problem of many in this smoke-and-mirror trickery is that they never considered the obvious corruption in the BID’s history. No, this whole scam is now fresh as a spring day.

While many landowners would say income from crops or timber harvest is their central ownership goal, most would also mention a place to raise their family, wildlife habitat, and many other cherished ownership values. Many landowners would like to see the next generation of their family pick up where they left off in managing the family place. But too often, they don’t act on this instinct soon enough, or they may have made some effort toward estate planning and a will, but haven’t brought the next generations of the family into the discussion.

Big-game feeding reserved for emergencies

Big game animals are congregating at low elevations, including near towns and homes after December snow blanketed much of Idaho, and with it some frigid temperatures. Some people are concerned about animals surviving through winter, but so far, Fish and Game has only started emergency feeding in Eastern Idaho where a wildfire last summer burned much of the available forage. Fish and Game is also feeding in the Wood River Valley to keep elk away from the highway and to reduce damage.

The “My Turn” column (Dec. 29, 2016) made me laugh. Among several illogical statements, Mr. Roach blames the goat-human conflicts on the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness group. That line of reasoning reminds me of the woman who was upset with Fish and Game for putting up “game crossing” signs. She wanted them to move the signs so that wildlife would stop crossing the road.

Program expands students' horizons

This bit of history from Bill Love, Jr., a former forester, caused a few shudders among the Clark Fork High School students who were participating in an Outdoor Experiential Learning Track field trip at Round Lake in Sagle.

Farmin Stidwell Elementary School held its annual food drive for several weeks leading up to the holiday break. The food drive officially started Dec.12 and ended on Dec. 21. Members of student council decided on the food drive due to the fact the food bank is low on food right now. They also felt that since it was the holiday season, it would be best to start giving.

Ringing in the new year with Twain, pigskin

More than 150 years ago the brilliant Mark Twain wrote a New Year’s Day column for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, in which he posited this gem, as true today as it ever was: Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community.

Friendships span two classrooms, 3,200 miles

SANDPOINT — As the warm sunshine streams through the classroom windows, it is apparent that the friendship between two classrooms over 3,200 miles apart — one a high school in Costa Rica, the other at Sandpoint High School — is growing strong. The website the classrooms are using is specifically designed to foster this unique friendship via an avenue of photos and messages describing typical days and activities throughout both schools. Students are developing a real understanding of what being a teenager in another country looks like.
