I went to the store this morning to get a few groceries. Just ahead of me in the checkout line a well manicured woman was complaining that California grocery stores were now charging customers ten cents for each plastic bag. Neither woman appeared aware that the ten cent fee was meant to deter the use of these bags.

National Day of Prayer celebration announced

For over a decade local Christ-followers have gathered on the first Thursday of May to pray for our nation and region. Our theme this year is “For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear Us … Forgive Us …Heal Us!” Taken from Daniel 9:19, which says, “O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and Act! For your sake, o my God...”. As the 2017 National Day of Prayer on May 4 approaches, thousands of individuals, churches, and communities will be working to rally millions of Christians to once again heed this call across the nation.

I am amazed at the total lack of constructive criticism/outrage over how the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office is processing/handling the murder investigation in Hope. Many of the details that have been published are facts only the killer would know. Seems the only competent people on scene were the medical first responders. Not informing the public? Very little to do with public safety and more to do with not knowing what to do (preparation for) in a situation such as this. A simple press release would have both informed the public and preserved intel. Seizing the dispatch logs says volumes.

Time and time again, we hear of the problems within the VA system, and the concerns on how to fix it in a timely manner. Simple solution — take away the “special” health and dental coverage members of Congress presently receive (which by the way should be the same plans as the rest of America has to live with), and present to the members of Congress the only health plan that would be available to them, the VA.

Easter and the first Earth Day
April 21, 2017 1 a.m.

Easter and the first Earth Day

The Easter egg hunts are over and most of the chocolate bunnies have been eaten. The processionals and sunrise services have come and gone from that special Sunday. But the glory of Easter is not just a day, but it is a life. Easter joy continues to find expression through ordinary people loving God and sharing that love with others. It shapes who we are and how we live. The resurrection of Christ Jesus invites us to live with heavenly expectations, and is a call to serve in ways that affect our world today. Christ’s resurrection shows us the importance of mixing heaven and earth. The theological word for this is “Incarnation.” Seeing God’s divine Presence in all things, and all things in God, is at the core of Christian faith. Transformation of the heart, especially through contemplative practices such as Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, and mindfulness meditation, helps clear our vision. Easter joy is grounded in the heart and intended to flow into the world with blessings of love, peace, patience, justice, and mercy, just to name a few.

Why wilderness? Let me count the ways

When I was 10 years old, my dad and I took a 10-day adventure along the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a canoe route established in northern Maine by that state’s Legislature in 1966 to preserve and protect the wilderness character of this unique area. This magnificent 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams starts northwest of Baxter State Park and flows toward Canada. Protection for the Allagash was enhanced in 1970 when it was named the first state-administered component of the National Wild and Scenic River System.

The most serious threat to the proposed Scotchman Peaks Wilderness area is not the hypothetical possibility that it might someday in the distant future be developed, mined, or logged (except as necessary to remove dead and diseased trees). By far the biggest threat is steadily increasing climate change, which all reputable scientists agree is going to continue and result in more and more catastrophic wildfires. I find it hard to believe that supporters of this proposed wilderness could be lined up with Donald Trump as climate change deniers.

The people of Sandpoint and Bonner County owe Sen. Shawn Keough a significant “thank you” for her work in the Idaho Legislature this year. As co-chair of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee, Sen. Keough was a key player in renewing funding for our state’s effort to stop the spread of invasive, non-native species to our waterways. Of particular concern is the potential introduction of Quagga and Zebra mussels, and slowing the spread of aquatic noxious weeds on boats being moved between waterways.

I believe most parents of children in Bonner County schools would like to know their children are not being targeted by administrators or teachers with beliefs antithetical to their own. But apparently this is exactly what has been happening at the Forrest Bird Charter School under the watchful eyes of at least two teachers and with the full knowledge and backing of Principal Mary Jensen. Without parental consent or knowledge, at least one student was recruited to participate in the Gay-Straight Alliance club held off campus. When approached by legal counsel representing the parents, the charter board’s statement called the allegations “baseless.” Yet, there is a recording with Principal Jensen that clearly corroborates the legal allegations. If parental involvement is so critical, as the school alleges, why keep secrets from parents?
