Life at 90: Christmas in July, huckleberries, turtles, birds, bees and the beauty of flowers
I’ve been having such a great time the past couple of months with the government windfall of $1,200! When that check came in, I knew exactly what I was going to do with it: Christmas shopping early! Having turned 90 in March, I figured that though I’m in pretty good shape (for the shape I’m in), it might be a great idea to have gifts for my six kids and their various and assorted progeny — totaling about 20 — purchased early. What fun! Even after the infamous Virus entered the scene, I’ve been able to stockpile the “perfect” gift for all of them, and the ensuing sorting, wrapping and in some cases, preparing for shipment, has been a ball.

There’s something happening here in Sandpoint
For decades, Sandpoint has had a thriving graffiti art presence. There are spots all over town which display the musings of our community, none more visible than the bridge at City Beach. I do not know of an instance when temporary chalk art was complained about or removed from that spot — until now.

The clear, cold trickle is summer’s refreshment
The first one was green and s-curved into the yard like a rubber snake between the cement slab at the bottom of the cement steps and along the cracked cement sidewalk that wound from the front door to the garage. The faded garden hose lay in the yard with the dandelions, sputtering water that made the lawn soggy because the faucet was left on.

To mask, or not to mask, that is the question
To date there is no scientific proof that a mask will truly provide sufficient protection. Given the mixed signals provided by the CDC and the W. H. O., there may be some doubt that those two organizations know what they are talking about. In January, Dr Fauci stated that masks were of little benefit, CNN stated that “You don’t need them, physicians say.” (1-28-20). By 3-31-2020, CNN reported “What the WHO and CDC have reaffirmed is that they do not recommend the general public wear masks.” Meanwhile, on April 6, the WHO advised “there is little evidence that masks are beneficial”.

One must address the causes to solve the problem
Every new generation believes they can change the world. One way of doing so is by peaceful protest which is a part of our nation’s fabric, but when protest transforms itself into burning, looting, and violence, then it loses some of its purpose. If one really wants to tackle the Black plight, one must address the many causes. To merely accuse narrowly one side or the other belies the strides that many Blacks have achieved.

Relationships in need of healing
The coronavirus has been in the forefront of the news and in the minds of so many leaders and people for months now. It reminds me that all of us are in need of healing from a deadly infection that has beset our population. This infection has caused divorce, poverty, alcoholism, drug abuse, physical and sexual abuse, depression, broken families, and even suicide. You see people suffering from this malady daily. What is this deadly pestilence?
Think of others, be responsible and wear a mask
So the state of Idaho won the Twitter award for posting the most “anti-masks” tweets. Isn’t that just wonderful. I am embarrassed and angry. The COVID-19 virus is not a tool to contest who can be the most obstinate to disobey guidelines and mandates to combat it. It is a worldwide health pandemic and the U.S. leads the way in the most cases. It has developed into widespread illnesses creating hundreds of thousands of deaths.
Mayor’s divisive behavior violates city’s ethics code
We spent a lot of time visiting Sandpoint before we made the decision to move here. What we loved so much about Sandpoint was how friendly everyone was. Even though we were “guests,” we felt as though were always a part of the community. Now that we are here full time, I’ve been paying more attention to the politics in town. It’s frightening to see an elected official, such as the mayor, being so divisive and making our family feel as though we are not welcomed based on our belief system. Mayor Shelby Rognstad is in a position where he should be listening to all of his constituents and not just the ones he agrees with. Name calling is something that is unbecoming of a mayor and should not be tolerated.

We need more honesty in coronavirus coverage
Dr. Scott Atlas, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, penned “Lies, Damn Lies and COVID-19 Statistics” for PJ Media, July 3, 2020. Explaining that “case” merely means a positive test and that half of cases are asymptomatic (does not exhibit symptoms) which means that a new case does not mean an illness, the doctor questions most of the shallow reporting about COVID-19. Instead, he suggests, we should “ … focus on who is getting infected and the death rate.”

City backs state’s tax relief efforts
SANDPOINT — Friday’s deadline for local governments to opt-in to Gov. Brad Little’s $200 million property tax relief program is quickly approaching. While Sandpoint City Council is one of many communities who have agreed to abide by the state’s conditions, others have argued that Little’s plan would be a detriment to rural communities and questioned its legality altogether.
Where do gun rights advocates draw the line?

Perhaps residents prevented out-of-control protests
It’s time the curtain is lifted on what Black Lives Matter is about, specifically for the group of naïve young people who felt compelled to hold a rally in solidarity with this organization. It seems that they, the Sandpoint mayor, and the lot of Sandpoint Indivisibles see no evil and hear no evil when it comes to this organization.

Did mayor tell others that grafitti was legal?
I am in possession of a screen shot from a Facebook page posted by a person named Amy. (Last name withheld as I don’t know if this is her real name.) She states in her post that she checked with Sandpoint Mayor Shelby Rognstad and learned that chalk art is NOT graffiti and completely allowed. She then recommended that “we should flood the bridge (referring to the Highway 95 byway at the entrance to City Beach) with art! She requested people meet her there at 11 a.m. the next day, and that she would bring “plenty of chalk for everyone.” A group of people did indeed descend on the bridge and covered it with graffiti.

Masters of trade still alive and well in Sandpoint
One of my favorite memories of the late ’30s and early ’40s was the sound of the triangle “bell” clanging down Third Street in Coeur d’Alene as the horse-drawn cart approached, and the shout of the driver — “Knives, scissors, hatchets and axes!” Mother would run to gather all her dull knives and scissors and take them to the curb to await her turn as the driver plied his trade. Beautifully sharpened utensils were the result — costing about 10 cents each — a dime was a darn good coin back then — and soon he’d clop his pony down to the next two across-the-street neighbors — all eagerly awaiting his talents. And a true talent it was — for who sharpens our cutlery now?

Fault-filled coronavirus models needs to be discarded
Many states assume that anyone with a positive coronavirus test has died from the disease, no matter what their actual cause of death. As the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health explained in April, “If you were in hospice and had already been given a few weeks to live, and then you were also found to have COVID, that would be counted as a COVID death. It means technically even if you died of a clear alternate cause, but you had COVID at the same time, it’s still listed as a COVID death.” That revelation is found in Alex Berenson’s “Unreported Truths About COVID-19 and Lockdowns.”
