Let IDL know we want trails for everyone

North Idaho has some wonderful recreation opportunities available to all types of recreationists, motorized and non-motorized. We are all lucky enough to have agencies like the Idaho Department of Lands willing to work with recreationists to provide access to their lands. In Brad Smith’s letter (April 30, Daily Bee), he mentions that the motorized recreationists should spend their money elsewhere, other than in Hayes Gulch, building a parking lot and installing a toilet.

McArthur Lake, a shallow reservoir between Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry managed by Fish and Game, will undergo a summer-long drawdown beginning June 1. The lake level will be dropped as low as possible over the course of four to six weeks and remain at that level throughout summer, which will render the fishing dock and boat ramp unusable until it’s refilled.

Anti-wilderness supporters continuing misinformation campaign

We keep hearing anti-Scotchman Peaks Wilderness rhetoric. Even after winning last year’s advisory vote, the opposers seem to have a need to justify their beliefs by keeping the misinformation and paranoid speculation flowing. Before last year’s vote they ginned up dire predictions about what wilderness designation would mean. These included eliminating guns and fire suppression from the area, the city Clark Fork burning in a wildfire and outright closure of the area to everyone. Surely the sky would be falling with wilderness designation.

Global warming skepticism for busy people

As professionals and not-so-professionals go back and forth, sometimes decidedly unprofessionally, about their opinions regarding the supposed danger signs due to human industrial productivity (Dr. Franksenstien would be horrified) very little attention is given to the role of nature in the changing climate. To be sure, the climate is almost always changing, that should not be denied. Exactly how much humans are causing the current changes is not settled. Some people are using computer models and unproven assumptions to invent what the future will be like. Those models have repeatedly exaggerated the desired results.

OK – a bit of artistic license has been taken in the story telling, but the stories are based on real experiences.

Questions of why children attacked infant need to be answered

While it’s clear that adult lack of supervision provided an opportunity for a baby to be assaulted, an equally pressing concern is why the other children brutally attacked the baby. Even if it was a case of “mob mentality,” the children’s behavior was extremely appalling, yet the focus seems to be only on the day care owner’s culpability. The infant is likely traumatized for life; shouldn’t we also be considering the mental health status of the perpetrators and questioning how children in our community could display such behavior?

Jack DeBaun (Daily Bee, May 9, 2019) demonstrates the intellectual dishonesty which has become so typical of climate change fanatics. He misrepresented my last letter by creating a straw man fallacy from some article that I never even mentioned, then told readers that the article I did mention somehow disproved itself. He totally ignored my real argument and dismissed the other article I quoted by referring to the website as “a fringe organization.” It appears that Mr. DeBaun cannot handle the truth.

Fruit, blossoming small trees boon for all

Today we wrap up our series on small trees and ornamental shrubs to mix and match in the landscape. Choices have varied from tall to short, bushy to open-branched and leafy, needled and/or flowering/fruiting, for planting in “layers” for a lush look. The thrust has been to point up multi-tasking choices that not only enhance the surroundings with beauty but provide sustenance through fruit or pollen to birds and insect pollinators and often, safe harbor for nesting birds. While some choices offer edibles to the grower, the general overview is for a combination of attractive practicality.

Private-public partnerships make government programs more efficient

Bonner General Health spent some of its funding on a clinic in Noxon, Mont. They also sent staff to Bonners Ferry, where they billed for services. Those were the decisions of a private entity operating in North Idaho. If they chose to stop these efforts due to a lack profitability then I think that they are showing a good stewardship of a non-profit’s funding. They receive a very small amount of funding from the Pend Oreille Hospital District to help provide for services in our community. I don’t see how we can blame BGH for operating at their discretion unless someone can show that the Pend Oreille Hospital District funds were not pent in our community. I would personally much rather see a private entity managing our tax funded mandates than create another bureaucracy to operate public clinics in the usual inefficient government manner.

Hutchings has the experience, integrity for hospital district

This letter is in support of Spencer Hutchings in the May 21 election for the open position on the Pend Oreille Hospital District board. I have known Spencer several years and have found him to be an honest man with integrity and a sense of duty toward his fellow citizens here in Bonner County. The name of his business “Sheepdog Supply” reflects this sense of duty, that of a sheepdog protecting the flock.

We need Burgstahler's experience on POHD board

When you receive your Bonner County property tax statement each year, you see a pie with slices representing the percent going to various entities, such as the library. The hospital district is a very thin slice of that pie, but a critical one for our hospital and its associated clinics.

May 16, 2019 1 a.m.

We need a change on the hospital district board

Are you aware that the property taxes you pay for the Pend Oreille Hospital District end up in the coffers of Bonner General Health in their entirety? The hospital then uses them for funding not only its own operations but has provided some support for clinics in Boundary County and even Montana?

Please vote “Yes” on May 21st for the West Bonner County School District supplemental levy. The proposed two-year, 2019-2021 maintenance and operations levy replaces the current levy. Despite juggling increased costs including unfunded mandates, WBCSD has held the levy amount flat since 2013 in response to voter concerns. Your WBCSD levy taxes though have seen a decrease of over 16 percent from 2017 to an expected $1.47 levy rate per $1000 net market value.

Why doesn't no mean no for school district?

I have been taught that when someone says no, that is the end of it. You don’t keep trying to proceed but, the West Bonner County School District doesn’t believe in that philosophy. They try to browbeat you over and over until you give in. They love trying to push things down your throat, and the levy is case in point. Several months ago they initiated an election on a levy for schools similar, if not the same as the levy they are pushing for this month. A short while ago the people of the WBCSD voted no on the school levy. For some reason the message did not get across to the school board. Even though the people have voted no, the school board continues to try and push the raising of taxes and this levy on the people of the district. No, no, no on the levy.

Expires March 25, 2025 NOTICE REQUIRED BY IDAHO LAW Mortgage foreclosure is a legal proceeding where a lender terminates a borrower's interest in property to satisfy unpaid debt secured by the property. This can mean that when a homeowner gets behind on his or her mortgage payments, the lender forces a sale of the home on which the mortgage loan is based. Some individuals or businesses may say they can "save" your home from foreclosure. You should be cautious about such claims. It is important that you understand all the terms of a plan to "rescue" you from mortgage foreclosure and how it will affect you. It may result in your losing valuable equity that you may have in your home. If possible, you should consult with an attorney or financial professional to find out what other options you may have. Do not delay seeking advice, because the longer you wait, the fewer options you may have. Under Idaho law, you have five (5) days to rescind or undo certain contracts or agreements that relate to transferring interests in property or money in a foreclosure situation. An attorney or financial professional can tell you more about this option. SNP LEGAL 6731 AD# 288279 APRIL 30, MAY 7, 14, 21, 2019

Use of county roads is returning to normal

Most Bonner County rural drivers have probably had occasions to observe some of our rural roads suffered a variety of maladies this spring, some of which significantly impacted travel. Adding to the frustration of driving through mud, is waiting for the road base to dry up enough to begin doing repairs. I attempt to not overuse the locals’ cliché of: “Whoa, you think your road is bad now, you should have seen the roads we had around when I was a kid growing up.”

Climate change predictions proven reasonably accurate

Monte Heil (Letter, May 2, 2019) cites “Atmospheric Escape – Wikipedia,” in an effort to substantiate his claim that CO2 cannot accumulate in the Earth’s atmosphere and contribute to warming. Following the link “carbon dioxide” in his citation, it states in part, “carbon dioxide is the most significant long-lived greenhouse gas in Earth’s atmosphere. Since the Industrial Revolution anthropogenic emissions — primarily from use of fossil fuels and deforestation — have rapidly increased its concentration in the atmosphere, leading to global warming.” He appears to be blissfully unaware that the information he provides clearly refutes his key talking point. Mr. Heil’s failure to recognize that the citation he offers in support of his argument actually disproves it and casts serious doubt on the reliability of anything he has to say about global warming.

The City and District request any written comment greater than 1 page be submitted by 4 p.m. May 16, 2019. Written material not exceeding 1 page may be read into the record the day of the hearing. Written comment can be mailed to City of Dover, P.O. Box 115, Dover, ID 83825-0115, or faxed to (208) 265-9035.

Identity crisis for Idaho's GOP?

I sit in a Coeur d’Alene Starbucks and wait for an answer from these two men: one a 36-year-old from Rathdrum, the other 29 from just south of Athol, both physically fit, both with high and trim haircuts, both dressed in matching fatigue pants and combat boots. They stumble a few times as they try to agree on an appropriate response.
