We need to challenge the Republican Central Committee
Many things in life are defined by the finer details. Apparently, the Idaho GOP failed to print the finer details in their statement on the main page of the Idaho GOP website. Maybe they meant to follow each of these with “as determined by the local Republican Central Committee.”

OPINION: Be wary of confrontational politics
Discussing politics with friends often elicits a common refrain: "It's so ugly! I hate politics! It doesn't even matter if I vote. Yuck." Unfortunately, this sentiment is not accidental; it's a byproduct of a communication style known as 'confrontational politics.' This approach is corrosive and aggressive, aimed at discouraging participation in both social media and voting.

Study: MDMA may ease PTSD symptoms
A study has found that the psychedelic drug MDMA, combined with talk therapy, can reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Researchers reported the results Thursday in the journal Nature Medicine. The research sponsor plans later this year to seek U.S. approval to market the drug, also known as ecstasy. The Food and Drug Administration would need to approve before MDMA could be prescribed and the Drug Enforcement Administration would need to change the drug's legal status. PTSD also can be treated with other medications or talk therapy. Experts say a new option would be welcome.

I enjoy reading the community opinion letters in the Bee. Reality is such hope is rarely attained.

Open primaries will bring socialism to Idaho
Vote no on open primaries. Open primaries are, in my opinion, just another way to bring socialism to Idaho. Democrats are, unfortunately for them, the minority in Idaho. By changing the way we vote in primaries, they believe they can get a Republican in name only into office to support their socialist agenda. That was proven in our recent primary and general elections.

Why is commission rubber-stamping subdivision?
The Providence Subdivision should not be approved, and yet, it looks like it already has, even though another meeting is still on the Planning and Zoning board agenda. Having lived in Kootenai Meadows for over 42 years, I have walked on and hunted on this proposed subdivision property when it was clearly marked and taped off for wetlands. So tell me, how does it go from being a wetland where geese, ducks, and other wildlife drink from the waters to being completely dry and suitable for 116 proposed home sites?

The applicant's traffic study needs to be revised. Commissioners should protect people, not developer's profits
Bonner County’s broken planning and zoning system is tearing our community apart. The proposed Providence Road subdivision is an example of this conflict, with developers wanting to do as little as possible yet asking for access to our public services while the surrounding neighbors expect protection from flooding, fires, and traffic congestion. It seems that our state statutes and comprehensive plans should guide a process aimed at reasonable compromise, but they are being ignored.
Why are residents' concerns not being heard?
I currently live in the Seven Sisters development in Kootenai. Along with many others, I am disturbed by the proposed Providence Road development. I attended two zoning meetings and heard the concerns about traffic, egress roads for escape in case of fire, safety for our children, water and sewage lack of capabilities to handle the extra housing, and Kootenai Elementary only having room for four more students. Still, the Zoning Commission wants to go ahead with the development? This makes no sense.

Pig kidney transplant raises hope for animal-human transplants
For a history-making two months, a pig's kidney worked normally inside a brain-dead man. And while the dramatic experiment ended in mid-September, it's raising hope for eventually testing pig kidneys in living patients. Surgeons at NYU Langone Health removed the pig kidney and returned the donated body to his family for cremation. The genetically modified kidney worked properly the first month before showing subtle signs that rejection was forming. But doctors say the kidney's function bounced back with simple medication changes. The lessons could help as regulators decide whether to allow clinical trials of pig organs.

Annual procession draws thousands of faithful
In the small town of Lamego in Portugal's Douro River Valley, where harvesting grapes for wine is in full swing in early September, one of Portugal's largest and oldest religious festivals draws thousands. Unlike most such Catholic festivals, in Lamego it's pairs of oxen, not the faithful, that pull floats with images of the Virgin Mary in procession. It's an homage to the area's agricultural traditions. The most revered statue, that of Our Lady of Remedies, shows Mary breastfeeding an infant Jesus – another uncommon image. The procession remains popular even in rapidly secularizing Portugal, where the Catholic Church has been reckoning this year with a long-ignored clergy sexual abuse scandal that Pope Francis addressed during a recent visit.

FDA advisors: Leading decongestant doesn't work
Government advisers say the leading decongestant used by millions of Americans to treat nasal congestion doesn't actually work. The Food and Drug Administration convened an expert panel to review the latest data on phenylephrine. That's used in over-the-counter versions of Sudafed, Dayquil and most other cold and allergy medicines sold on pharmacy shelves. Drugmakers reformulated their pills and solutions with the ingredient after a 2006 law required an older drug to be moved behind the counter. But researchers have long questioned the ingredient's effectiveness. The FDA advisers say new studies show oral phenylephrine was no better than a placebo at relieving congestion.

The logic of an open primary
I was taken back after Attorney General Labrador’s lost court case involving misinformation around the Open Primary Initiative to discover that Dorothy Moon and the Idaho Republican Central Committee’s efforts in opposing the Open Primary Initiative seem to center on ranked choice voting, right down to a new pamphlet on the subject and Sarah Palin’s experience with it. Not only are open primaries and ranked-choice not related, but they’re not even close. One is a method for electing public officials, while the other is an attempt to remove voter restrictions. To be perfectly clear, the proposed initiative is only about the latter.

Pope aims to keep meeting closed, ideology-free
Pope Francis has defended the decision to keep the discussions of a big Vatican meeting on the future of the Catholic Church behind closed doors. He said Monday the three-week conference is a religious moment for the church and "not a television program" that is open to scrutiny. Francis was asked repeatedly on his way home from Mongolia about the October meeting, or synod of bishops, which is opening after an unprecedented two-year canvassing of rank-and-file Catholics around the globe about their hopes for the church. Many Vatican watchers consider the synod to be a defining moment of the Francis pontificate. The official agenda includes hot-button issues such as the role of women in decision-making roles in the church, the acceptance of LGBTQ+ Catholics and celibacy for priests.

Tired of minority rule? Support open primaries
Are you tired of minority rule? We here in Idaho, especially here in the north, are aware that whoever wins the primary election will go on to win the general election. Most of our elections go unopposed by a diversity of parties, for a myriad of reasons. If you are registered as unaffiliated, you are no longer allowed to vote in the Republican primary. All of this guarantees low voter turnout and minority rule.

I think my brain was finally like, I want to help, but I want to help people."
Parliamentary procedures making for smooth county meetings
Parliamentary procedure appears to have become something of an issue among our county commissioners. Robert’s Rules of Order was first published in 1876. Although Robert was a U.S. Army officer, he did not base the book on military rules. Its purpose is to enable assemblies of any size to reach decisions in a minimum amount of time and under internal divisions of opinion.

Pope heads to Mongolia to complete centuries-old mission
Pope Francis is traveling to Mongolia this week to minister to one of the world's tiniest and newest Catholic communities, the first-ever visit by a Roman pontiff to the East Asian country. In some ways, he will be completing a mission begun by the 13th- century Pope Innocent IV, who dispatched a series of emissaries east with letters to ascertain the intentions of the expanding Mongol Empire. Some 800 years later, Francis won't be testing new diplomatic waters or seeking to proselytize Mongolia's mostly Buddhist people. His trip is still a historic meeting of East and West. Officially, there are only 1,450 Catholics in Mongolia and the Catholic Church has only had a sanctioned presence since 1992, after Mongolia shrugged off its Soviet-allied communist government.
