Said sale will be made without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances to satisfy the obligation secured by and pursuant to the power of sale conferred in the Deed of Trust executed by CHRISTINE A. The cost of setting up railroad quiet zones was the subject of an article in the Bee (April 14, 2016). The railroad wants the danger of the horn not being blown to be mitigated. Install motion detectors to detect any activity in the track area after the lights are on and the arms are down. If these warning signals are activated and motion is detected, a horn can be blown automatically. The horn doesn’t have to be on the train, but it could be. When the horn is blown, a camera could take pictures of what caused the activation. If a car is identified as the activation problem, the driver could be penalized for breaking a law that should be in place to stop drivers from going around the warning signals that mean a train is coming. This law should also state that anyone that breaks this law does so at their own risk. Any damage or hurt caused by a breaking of the law, should not be the responsibility of the railroad.

Remember to protect your skin this summer

The sun has blessed us this year with early warmth and opportunities to be outside and get our landscape gardens spruced up and begin our home based vegetable gardens. With the oncoming summer weather, the time to take precautions for our skin health is upon us as well. Our skin is a mighty organ protecting us from all sorts of onslaughts. It protects us from bacterial invasion, many kinds of injuries by forming scabs, alerts us to temperature changes by cooling us with sweating or dilating our blood vessels to retain heat when we need it, producing melanin, a skin pigment protecting us from UV radiation, and notifying the immune system warriors when anything goes amiss. We shed millions of skin cells daily that are replaced by underlying tissue to keep us healthy. A fifteen to twenty minute exposure to the sun enables our skin cells to develop Vitamin D that can be stored in our tissues. There are many more activities our skin accomplishes for us each day, so we want and need to keep it healthy.

A high school's mission statement used to be to prepare students for the workplace by providing them with the skills needed to be productive members of society. The library was and is a knowledge resource center. With the decline in our school's ability to train students in skills which will allow them to earn a living, it seems that the library is taking over that role. The Industrial Arts department in schools- shop classes, are being replaced by other subjects which may be enriching but don't seem to help the students get jobs. The drafting, print shop, metal shop, and wood shop provided entry level skills so that our students could get jobs if they chose not to go to college. Since the schools and the library are both supported by our taxes, I suggest that both organizations get together and decide who will become the provider of job skills. When this is decided, we can spend our tax dollars on the institution that best supports our needs. I applaud the library for responding to the needs of our city and caring about the employability of our kids.

Even when we sin, God remains faithful

On Tuesday, March 8, my friend was sentenced to prison. The Daily Bee reported on the front page (Thursday, March 10; “Man gets 10 years in shooting” by Keith Kinnaird.) I knew my friend was sentenced two days earlier but I had not yet heard the results until that moment. Deputy Prosecutor Shane Greenbank said of me and others who called him a friend, “He certainly had a fan club. I also find it interesting that they don’t really know him. They know what he’s told them.” First District Judge Barbara Buchanan said the court was troubled that his contemporary life was built on a lie, that it involved abandonment of two small children and that he had not been the honored military veteran that he had claimed to be. “The problem is you don’t tell the truth so it’s hard for me to give much truth to what you say happened that night.”

Good uses of government include funding basic research, laying out infrastructure and communication networks, and helping coordinate the provision of utilities and basic minimums of good citizenship. These efforts promote the general welfare and facilitate smooth functioning of the economy. Poor uses of government include picking winners and losers or allowing government to be usurped by special interests, corporate money or nepotism. Those approaches have ways of separating taxes from individuals and reallocating them to uses that lack voter consent, implicit or otherwise. Giving government such a role is very dangerous for small communities with thin tax bases.

A supporter of Sen. Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint, recently opined in a letter that you have to live in Idaho for 10 years before you can have a political opinion and 15 years before you can voice it. This is, of course, laughable and speaks to a provincial state of mind; but sorry to say, I’ve heard this sentiment expressed by other Bonner County “old-timers” along with “We all used to be Democrats here,” “Republican used to be a dirty word,” and “we reigster as Republicans because that’s where the power is now.” It does help to immediately identify who the RINOs are, though.

Heather Scott loves controversy. In fact, she loves it so much she stirs it up even when it doesn't exist. First there was the Priest River veteran who had to be saved from the VA, then there were the armed thugs at the Malheur Refuge who needed to be “shielded” from law enforcement. Now we have the Clagstone conservation easement controversy. Dear Heather opposes the easement because public dollars would be used to purchase it instead of the landowner, Stimson Lumber Company, simply donating it out of the goodness of their heart. Well, Stimson Lumber Company is a for-profit business in the best tradition of free enterprise and the $12.6 million “donation” would have been a nice gift to conservation, but that's a lot of money. For the uninitiated, $12.6 million is the portion of the total value of the property attributed to the potential of the land to be sub-divided. If the land was located in a remote area away from roads, that value would be lower. With the conservation easement, Stimson would sell that portion of the 13,000 acre property's value to a land conservancy and keep the land as a working forest. The area would also be managed for wildlife habitat open to public walk-in hunting, be protected from sub-division and Stimson would get reduced property taxes. Hunters win, conservationists win, loggers win, Stimson wins, land sub-dividers loose. Yet, Heather opposes it based on some basic wing-nut principle against conservation easements. Good grief!
